Good call by Drake, great job getting right in there, but he seems almost too close (the runner slid into him)

I don't think he squeezed the zone too badly, at least when you consider how poor the pitcher's command was - Leyland even commented later on the in-game interview that with poor control you can't expect to get the close pitches.

that said though ...

Scherzer had Jeter out on a check swing cock-shot on the outer-half ...all over the plate .... ball 4 ...oh well, no bearing in the game, ...and .... Laird was moving A LOT also....and we all know that doesn't help!

The advanced mechanic for the professional umpires is to get really close on tag plays. He was right on the money.

If he is standing, it makes it a lot harder to see that high tag.
