Working LL Junior Game Saturday

Foul catches me flush in lower part of my mask and drops me to my knees. :tantrum:

Jaw hurts and headache sets in pretty fast.

When game is over we tried to get someone to cover the next game but couldn't so I did another game behind the plate.

I know I should not have but it is that part of me that says get the job done and never quit.

I wasn't good and I didn't hustle a lot but we got the game done.

I was just on autopilot trying to get it over.

Drove home, carefully because I knew I wasn't feeling right.

Was hearing a white noise humming in my ears  and was feeling nausea.

Walked into house and had wife take me to Urgent Care.

They took me in right away over the lobby full of people they had because of my symptoms.

Was sent for a CT scan within half hour without the doctor even looking at me and going off what the triage nurse had documented.

Longest wait was for Doctor to get report back on CT Scan which took just over a hour.

While Doctor was waiting for CT Scan report he already started talking about getting me admitted for at least the night.

Luckily I was sent home with a Soft Collar Neck Brace for mild whiplash and some pain and muscle relaxer meds which I wasn't allowed to start till Sunday afternoon.

Got some good sleep yesterday once I started taking them.

Also told not to work anymore games until at least Thursday and to follow up with my Primary Care Doctor.

Mask = Diamond Featherweight Mask

I had switched to Wilson Wrap around pads and tried them in 2010 but didn't like them after my first concussion with that mask.

I also had started using All Star System 7 HSM when it was not hot and felt I needed extra protection.

I will be replacing the pads for good and also using my HSM for the near future period.

Luckily I have good medical coverage and this only cost me small co payments.

It did cost me 5 games I can not work and more if I don't get cleared Thursday.

Not sure if I want to work that game anyway since it would be just me on the plate.

I usually don't get headaches at all and this one sucks along with my neck being sore.

So check your mask pads and replace them when necessary.

I learned the hard way and my head is not as hard as it was when I was younger.

Don't sacrifice a little weight for protection.

It is not worth it in the long run.

Hope you feel better soon buddy.

Just a question I know you were using a Shock Doctor mouthguard once upon a time, were you using it then?

No. It got lost some where along the way.

I do wonder if it would have helped

semper-fi,

You may already know this, but I gotta' ask...

How tight are your mask straps?

Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

BTW, I just got a set of the "Team Wendy's" pads and, from the one solid shot I've taken, my impression is that they do offer superior protection to what I've worn before. Just FYI.

Mask straps are adjusted properly.

It was just a flush hit and mask had no where to go although it did move some.

I think it hit me just below the vision opening so it was a bullseye.

Will be looking at Team Wendy pads.

I keep trying to get away without wearing my soft neck collar but SWMBO and daughters are all over me when I am not wearing it.

Feel Better, Semper. Take it easy coming back, concussions are serious.

Do you think you'll be going HSM only for the near future when you get back?

Were you in the slot or working right over the catchers head in that hot zone somebody put on here with pictures once. I will assume you were in the slot.

Can they give you that concussion baseline test everywhere now, or is that just for the pro sports. If they give that in your area and you have good insurance, I would get that test done before going back. Of course you might have to take that test before the season to see where your baseline is.

Although you are a good umpire and work for the kids and want to get back, I do not want you to end up like Muhammad Ali from all those shots to the head.

Take care

The slot is my home and wouldn't set up any place else.

Just one of those inside, fouled off pitches that F2 little Johnny spaghetti strainer couldn't even touch and the batter should have never tried to hit because it was definitely going to be a BALL.

Hope you get well soon Lou. I've been thinking of replacing my wrap-arounds in favor of the team wendys pads. I think your concussion convinced me.

Had my follow up doctor appointment today.

Didn't get cleared.

Was told to wait until my next appointment on 5/1.

I am taking that as no plates and will work bases this weekend if possible.

Just need the headache to go away some more.

SWAMBO says we will discuss what I will do and won't do this weekend come Friday.

Wish she wasn't in the doctors office when the doctor said that. :shakehead:

Take some time and get right. Been there and done that. If you get "dinged" again it is exponentially worse. It was for me anyway. Best of luck and here's to a speedy recovery.

I agree with boyinr. Take the time to heal. Instead of working games this weekend, maybe just go and watch a few. Hope you feel better soon.

Lou, I agree with your wife. Take it easy and don't hurry back, especially because you still have headaches. It's not worth risking your health for. I hope you feel better real soon, buddy!!!

When I was playing football in HS, I received a concussion in a game and didn't realize it. I knew I was not feeling right for a few days but kept practicing. The next week I suffered another concussion from a fairly light hit. The combination of the two ended my season and I had a lot of problems for months after the fact.

The point is, please don't try to tough it out and go back too soon. Concussions are nothing to mess with.

hi steve , i have been using the team wendy pads for this whole HS season with a diamond silver mask . i have not taken any shots , however it is encouraging to hear from others that the pads do make a difference .

three words: chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

Take ALL the time needed, and then a little more. Don't take chances with this.

Lou, like everyone else has said...DONT RUSH IT! Glad to hear you are getting better and on the mend.

One thing though, you said during the second game after you took the shot, "WE" got through it. If you meant "we" as in you and your partner, is there some reason he could not take the plate for you?
