Douglas Shin Guards...why are they $239?
ArchAngel72 replied to SeeingEyeDog's topic in Umpire Equipment
hmm I know a ball hit the shinguard but I could not tell you exactly where with my F3's CLACK.. F2 "Blue you good" Me: "Yep never felt it" -
Its amazing how many local LL establishments pull in "by laws" and add things or subtract things but never send it up to the District level for them to send it to the regional level for things to ACTUALLY be approved. No one usually gives a rats behind about it locally but you get some places that will do things like this which at the regional trainings they express they specifically DO NOT WANT. They understand the safety aspect of it but they want the coaches to get the training done on it. Heh we got one local league that 12U does not do dropped 3rd strikes... No skin off my nose but talk about a playoff nightmare for those kids getting into Allstars they are at a major disadvantage a lot of them cause they are not used to it. anyway my 2 cents teach the kids, don't discipline them like that for throwing the bat, and trust me I have taken a good handful if not 2 handfuls to the shin guards or hips or sides..

The "new" trend in baseball..."Let's Effing Go!"
ArchAngel72 replied to SeeingEyeDog's topic in Situations
Real simple at my level. That language is not tolerated at all in LL.. A kid does it he gets one warning and the rest of the bench gets the warning as well. A coach does it . Boom gone. -
I mean if its a ball 4 walk. Yeah do not call time until all moving runners hit their next base.
-
Action happening on the field I wait till everything is set and stopped with the pitcher on the mound with the ball before I will grant a defense "Time" runners also have to be on the base or maybe a foot or so from it. Unless it is a walk everyone has to hit their base before I call "Time". One exception. and obvious injury on the field. In LL player safety is #1 in my book. So if a kid takes one to the face.. Yeah "TIME" and move runners as needed.

Oh yeah I did not mean I would not call it a swing and a strike merely its not BI at that level not unless they hit the catcher or something while they make the throw

I think it has been an ongoing thing for decades. However I do feel it has gotten drastically worse in the past 4 years. Covid being one of the things. My league we lost 2 (jr) umpires who went to college and decided the fun life was more important. ( hey cant blame them Been there done that got the T shirt) But we have a early adult Umpire who has not grabbed nearly as many games as he used to due to work keeping him from handling what he used to. I also wonder how much of that is he does not want to give up week nights too. Also I look around at the Umpiring stock at the level I do and they are mostly middle age and later to nearing retirement. But again what I am seeing is local. I wish I got out of my area more often.

I would say this is easier to call at 13U plus but 12 U down.. I know LL would have a real hard tome with me calling that on some really unskilled 10U who's in his/her/their 1st year playing and Yeah we do have some 12U new people that would fall into this now. Ugh I still got 2 12U kids throwing the bat as they swing.. But anyway yeah nail them for BI its nothing but that imho

Talk to whomever your assignor is and also the league President or VP. Tell them that unless that fan is banned from ANY and ALL the LL parks you will no longer do games for them as that was an unsafe person at a game. The coaches alone should not stand for that person being there. I find it abhorrent that the coaches allowed that to go on. You as a young Umpire I feel horrible you had to go thru that. Best luck going forward.

Pics look like a rampage but descriptions a wire frame.. I think its a improper advertisement

The best way I would say for you to figure it out is to go to a field run a path that is a "straight" base path. Then lay down a yard stick 90 degrees to it and run a bath around the yard stick. Go back to where you would normally adjudge that call and take a look at it. If you have 2 people to help bring them and put them on those paths. Look at it several times and try to get used to that distance rake the area and then practice it without the paths but try and call it yes or no and then lay down the yard stick and see if you were right or not. To me that's the only way you will be able to figure out your own "judgement" for a 3 foot deviation ( practice seeing what it looks like) In the end its your judgement if they did it or not.. I find with the less than adult sized folks its harder to "see" that 3 feet. I do not grasp it but to me a taller more adult person I see a yard so much easier with.. /shrug Then again youth players to me seem to either run thru the fielder ( getting tagged out anyway) or they take off for the outfield and are easy calls to make

So a while ago some guy here cried Wolfe and said he was retiring .. Sold a butt load of nice gear.. I was fortunate enough to jump on one thing I had my eye on when he posted it. I replaced the nike harness with an AS one as the nike wont fit over my AS Skully /shrug. I also replaced the TW pads that were on it which were black but still on a 70 degree day they felt like bricks so I had a fresh pair of black TW's I had never installed and as I was dropping them out the bag, Out dropped the grey AS Mag pads that came with my silver AS 4kMag chrome mask I got and then took them off for black pads. Hmm I thought.. So @wolfe_man do you recognize this mask I cannot recall the brand type it was but I liked it last night 1st time wearing it in this set up. kinda crappy photo but eh I will try to do better later

Dang sorry man.. I had one field we split time with softball. All the rest I do and do now are all baseball fields.. But trust me I talk to coaches constantly about staying IN the dugout as well as their buckets

12 U LL local to where I work. Got scheduled for this game a month ago. Head there got there with More than plenty of time as its local to my work. Fitted up a mask and TG that I got from Wolfeman I need to take some pics of it to post. anywho. I get 4 game balls from the home team and looked them all over they are RST balls ( Tourney) but whatever to me its league play and I told the President of the league who gave them to me that these were tourney balls and probably more expensive than the RS balls they are supposed to use. He ho hums it and says does not matter.. OK away we go. get thru 3 innings have had more than a handful of foul balls sail out of the field and well some of them are not coming back. Sigh well I get a couple that went out VT side and no joke 3 Times in a row the VT coach is roughing up a ball and says here you go blue, tosses me a ball and I look it over and it states in big bold letters. "OFFICIAL PRACTICE BALL" I read it and toss it back to him, "Nope coach not a game ball says practice ball on it". Sure enough next foul he tries to give me another one or the same damn one I do not know.. UGH.. middle of the 4th he comes to me with 3 new actual game balls and says "Sorry about that you were good on checking them as I was not." I swear I may start bringing a small sharp tip sharpie and marking the damn game balls so I know they are the ones I started with or came into the game that I am doing.. not that I care really other than having proper game balls. Just don't want some mushy practice ball that WAS a game ball but you have used it with the batting net 1000 times and its junk now.. But I was chuckling at the coach, I felt like asking him "Coach do you have glasses or need them?" Anyone else running into this? I know Money is tight and balls are expensive but dang..

So umm which field is it? All I see is softball fields..

AAU around here does allow one guy on deck. LL does not, they allow the 1st batter of the inning out and that is it. Its funny though when you look at Regionals and WS stuff I swear you see an on deck batter there, maybe not. But anyway its about safety and that is it. I have seen kids lose teeth due to on deck batters not paying attention as well as the kid running out to grab the bat. I do not need to see anymore chicklets happening. Also I have seen coaches get clocked a time or 3 cause someone crossed over to their side and no one was paying attention ( Coach or batter) So yeah stay on your side until your at bat..
-
I had a game earlier in the year and 8-10u Both teams in one inning had 2 or more players cross home and MISS home. I waited an inning and then went and reminded both coaches to tell their players to make sure the touch home plate. Told them both what I saw and then the 2nd team asks "can I appeal those" LOL "NO" Both coaches immediately spoke to their teams and then watched the players as they came home, even telling one kid go back go back and touch home when he missed it by a mile..

The mechanic from what I was told is you point (Left arm) at the Runner and say "YOU XBASE" or "YOU HOME" telling them 2 bases would then bring upon the Well 2 bases form where and or when?
-
RiP Rich! Hope you got that perfect game finally.
-
Scenario #1 is my LL nightmare cause if I tell a kid. "You Home" I have just instructed him he goes home. Then him and the coach will both blame me for sending him home when I KNEW he needed to retag and then its YOU 3rd base. I get it with say 13 yr olds and older but a 8-10u kid.. EEESH It makes me cringe so hard.

My thoughts.. EFFE NO!.. In a living close game you make the call as you see it I do not give a damn what the dugouts or fans think. You make the right call. Now 20-0 route and thats the winning team Yep I am banging him out and not caring one bit.. you are still running on a team when you are up 20 to zero Im calling you out if its close.. my thoughts anyway
-
Well Since I posted this it seems I have found 2 teams that one I do not recall being like this and the other I did not umpire yet and they both have some BAD coaches and parents on.

So.. some of you may recall my thoughts on rumbling noises being heard.. Here is something I never thought I would have to do. Less than 1.5 miles from our 6:00 game a shooting occurred. Looks like nephew shot his uncle at the Uncle's restaurant. By the time news alerts came out we were about 1 hr into the game. Incident happened at around 5:45pm News alerts hit at around 6:50pm. Reports of shooting and shooter was still at large. HT Mgr called for a conference as top of 4 went to bottom of 4. Got both me and the VT Mgr and told us about the alerts and suggested due to shooter being "at large" that we suspend the game and get everyone home. The VT Mgr agreed and I confirmed it. Yep Game suspended due to shooter at large Trust me I am not being the least bit sarcastic. I am and was "Very happy" to say Yep get home stay safe. Map for visual satisfaction. I gotta tell you it took all the petty crap that was going on in the game and made it seem REAL SMALL. ie I called Ci on their catcher in the 2nd when a not so good batter was late on his swing and pretty much swung straight down onto the glove on the catcher in his attempt to hit the ball. Saw it heard it.. Yet VT coach still wanted to argue about it. Catcher admitted he got hit but could not understand why it was his fault. Had P3 on VT receive the ball stumbled off 1b and then in his ballerina moves dropped the ball ( I called safe at 1st as it was not a voluntary release of the ball. VT coaches were upset about that too. Then because of that play their scorer messed up her book and had that player out and did not score him when he scored and also complained about 4 outs being recorded ( yeah shes a Karen) Her mouth was running from the dugout and I should have not only tossed her but also kicked out another coach 1st as they had 4 coaches on the bench including her.. So boot one of the guys out then toss her for her mouth.. ( I heard from 2 other coaches from other teams they been doing that all year and shes been talked to several times) sigh.. But yeah all small petty crap
