New Umpire: What's the best equipment to buy?
Magic replied to Dodgers47's topic in Umpire Equipment
I do the same thing. They keep you cool and dry... and ready for action! I call them my "super-duper fancy pants." I always wear them as well, plate or base, doesn't matter. Games Worked Too Damn Many -

I always start game time when we break the plate meeting. And I tell both Coaches what game time is. Games Worked Too Damn Many

Congrats. I was notified last week that I was selected to represent our Association in the CIF Finals. The Board nominates 4 members and then CIF selects 0-4 to work 1 of the 7 CIF Championship games. I am #2 on our list of 4. Here's to hoping I get 1. Games Worked Too Damn Many

It is a Balk all day long.... Oh is it to late for April Fools day? I wouldn't balk that. Like the posts above, Coaches would try and use that every time they could if we did. Games Worked Too Damn Many

Some people tend to be pretty negative toward umpires. If Alfonso kicked a call (I haven't seen the plays in question). That comes with the territory. He is one of the best umpires in the world. And would make you and I look like we should never umpire another game. Games Worked Too Damn Many

move that left foot forward a bit Our instructors were usually telling us to move back and up if we had a hard time getting the corner, but that always seemed to limit me too much. I'm going to try this tonight and see how I like it. Do you do the same thing for a left-handed batter? If so, how do you avoid what seems to be inevitable contact with the catcher's throwing arm? I haven't had an issues with catchers. They usually step and throw, which puts them pretty far away from me. Games Worked Too Damn Many

I dipped for 20 years until I quit 4 years ago. Honestly I can say I never dipped in. High School game and never will. I used to dip in Pony games in the 90s. Of course that was well before the rules of no tobacco products on school grounds. I don't notice when anyone else dips. Not my business. If they want to break the rules, that's on them. It is not for me to say anything. But you guys that think Noone notices, trust me, everyone notices. Especially someone who did it as long as I did. Games Worked Too Damn Many

Can someone make @zm1283 a sandwich. If we want to call it a stance then, by gosh, we are going to call it a stance. It is our right. That is why we live in this great Country. So I love my NEW SUPER SLOT STANCE!!!! How about you? Games Worked Too Damn Many

That might work in OC, CA, but in East Texas 2A/3A, you would probably have to fight your way out of there if you took this approach...no joke. Do you really want to start a firestorm or do you want to just let the teams decide the game. In these games of little consequence (to me) the more rules coaches agree to waive the better I like it (except for safety rules). Free substitution...no problem. 5 run max per inning...great Idea. No reason to suggest that you'd make a good parking lot pinata. Lets all have a good time. That wouldn't happen in Orange County, because coaches out here know the rules. Billy Joe Jim Bob is not coaching the team. And Larry the Cable Guy is not his assistant. But @Mudisfun would not start ejecting coaches. Not over something like this. If he did he would realize, there would be a lot more problems than what it's worth. I would just look at both Coaches and say, "I disagree with this 100% and I am going to be sending a letter to my IC and my Assignor and let them know what happened. But let's get the game in." After all it is about the kids. Games Worked Too Damn Many

Well this much I can tell you for sure, this stance is new to me. It might not be new to zm1283, but us lowly peeps it is new to. I worked a very High Level High School game tonight, and I think I might have missed one pitch. And it wasn't a gross miss. It might have caught the outside edge of the plate, and I balled it. This was in the 6th inning. After the game, the Head Coach of the losing team came up to me and said great job back there tonight. You were as good as we have seen all year. I love it and I am not changing. My NEW Stance is the Super Slot. Games Worked Too Damn Many

Ok so day 2 of the Super Slot. And I must say, I had some mixed results early. I think the Catcher hit my left leg(slot leg) twice during game 1. And I did feel myself get pinched a little bit when the catcher squeezed the inside corner. But what I can tell you is I am seeing the whole zone. No doubt in my mind about it. Tomorrow night will be the big test. I am on the plate for the #6 team in the Nation in their first league game. And it's 3 man. Working with the President of our Association and the likely Crew Chief for our Finals crew this year. Should be fun. I will let you know how it goes. Games Worked Too Damn Many

@Mr Ump What is the Super Slot? Super Slot is a technique us college guys are using as of late. It is basically a staggered stance where say the batter is right handed. Place your left foot almost even with the catchers left foot and your right foot slightly turned out, even with the catchers spine. Now square up to the pitcher. This should give you total view of the outside corner. It takes balls to do so if you the scary type forget it. I love it. You will see the entire zone much better. I wish I had a pic but don't. I tried this out yesterday in some weekend ball. I absolutely loved it. Have 2 more plates today. And if I still love it will give it a whirl tomorrow night in my High School game. I should add, I am not 100% sure I am doing it right. But I am doing it close to how you described it. Games Worked Too Damn Many

I never bring anything out to the field that I don't want to leave behind. If crap goes bad, I want to be able to leave without worrying about my Super sipper 2 partner H2O generator that I spent $5.00 at Walmart for. Games Worked Too Damn Many

Incorrect sir. They can jump up and bit at any time. Read my ejection. It was Church before that. Games Worked Too Damn Many
