  1. I agreed to work a 10u scrimmage by myself last night for a friend's team. Other than the jack wagon who wanted to complain about the strike zone starting with the 2nd pitch, the night was fun. The best part was on a check swing and out of habit, the coach yells at the catcher to "ask for help" so when the catcher turned to me, I pulled off my mask, pointed to myself and said "Did he go?" And then I quickly said "NO!" Lots of laughs from the fans and the coaches too.

  2. I think the problem is that it is looked at as pay. I think of it as an honourarium (I know Canadian spelling) for the volunteer work we do. Coaches do not wash their team's uniforms. Coaches do not buy the team's equipment. Coaches do not have to pay for hemming of pants or getting patches or embroidery sewn on shirts and hats. Coaches are not being insulted for their decisions in the game. Before I stepped on the field this year, I spend over $1200 Canadian (about $925 US) on getting better as an umpire and making sure I have the necessary apparel and equipment to present a professional image on the field. The honourarium I receive in game fees recognizes the investment and contribution I give to the community to make sure the sport people love is played safely and fairly.

  3. I am certain the runner was tagged first. Absolutely certain.

  4. I volunteer for LL, but I've always found this argument idiotic. Coaches coach. Umpires work. I've coached my daughter's traveling team 2 of the last 3 years and I couldn't imagine getting paid to do it. But I wouldn't umpire a travel tournament in my backyard for free.

  5. Looks standard profile to me. Compared to the low profile mask that @Stk004 sold me, the mask for sale looks much deeper.

  8. Thank you gentlemen for the education this non umpire has received over the years reading this board. I was watching this last night while working from home and told my wife immediately the umpires got it right, and for the right reason, despite the wailings of the Cardinals' broadcast team. As has been pointed out many times, former players and broadcasters usually don't have a clue about the rules. Although I have to admit, I have never seen a play when the glove, with the ball in it, is being held by the runners cleats on the base when the player pulls his hand out and the glove stays put. But he clearly did not maintain control immediately after the tag, even thought the ball never came out of the glove. He was no longer attached to it. Always something you've never seen before.

  9. I do not see where you have a tag on R2 while R3 is touching 3B. We discussed that interp on here at some point and IIRC there was some diagram in PBUC that explained some of that? I see the potential to get abandonment on R3 bc one could gather that he has given up his base running assignment when he U-turns to HP but that is a tough abandonment call while he is still within steps of any baseline. 12. He gets himself into it, let him get himself out and fight his own battles. But I see what you are doing, you are friends and you don't him want him to get trashed in front of everyone. It's a pity you can't call anyone out on this forum, but that's typical in today's world.

  13. Right -- and you can see U2 indicate that right away -- he's patting his leg at the :06 - :07 mark

  14. Had this happen to me this season.... Varsity game, guy stealing second, F4 tags him and the glove comes off with the ball still in it. Coach couldn't grasp why it wasn't a catch, even though I asked him if he maintained in control of the ball .... ...oh well.......

  19. Rise, thread, rise. @Stk004 and I kicked it at Safeco last weekend but only one of us at a time would smile, apparently. (Sidenote: WTH I'm short.)

  20. Hold your horse, rookie. You only had 4 previous posts before this one. So my suggestion is to go back to the grave or pick someone else. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk

  21. Eject every single player who violates this rule. How dare they congratulate each other! Seriously unless there is assistance only the overly officious person is looking for a reason to get an out here... just make sure you see the touches at the bases.

  23. It's not just that they are veterans. It's the guys that have been umpiring for years yet refuse to attend a camp to learn the new ways. Some of us veterans attend yearly clinics. And I'm not talking about your little 2 hour association field clinic. Attend a reputable clinic.
