Greetings brothers,

I had a partner tonight recommend this product to me. Is anyone out there using this and if so, could you please post some feedback? I've been a Gatorade/Water mix guy for many years. Is this a superior product?

My girlfriend likes these a lot. Personally I don't like the way they taste. It kind of makes a thick water, if you can imagine that. I like the lemon lime (?) one the best. If you do try them out they taste much better ice cold than at room temperature.

This is setting off all of my quackery alarm bells.  "Wellness industry."  An orthopedic surgeon as the medical cite (not that they can't know things, but it's outside their specialty lane.

I don't see anything that would hurt anyone, but I also don't see anything that couldn't be done by blending a banana and salt into tap water.

I mean, I usually get Powerade Zero so I shouldn't judge.  If you're enjoying it, great.  But I'm seeing more snake oil than penicillin here.

I like them, I use them, I think they work. They basically are a concentrated mix of electrolytes, mixed in with some sugar.  When I do use it, I use it in double the amount of water to dilute the taste, and because if I’m taking it, I need the fluids anyways.  Lemon-lime and tangerine is good, passion fruit is tolerable.  All have a salty taste, because salt is needed for the body.

Basic concept is that your body needs to maintain it's fluid level for the systems to operate normally. When you sweat, or don't take in fluids, you dehydrate, and body systems suffer. Additionally, the body uses the electrolytes, they are sweated out (think salt stains on your cap), and plain water doesn't replace those. The body needs the fluids to maintain good oxygen deliverance to muscles, less thick viscosity, and the body needs to electrolytes to get the fluids to move across cells correctly. The body needs both.

what I don’t like is it saying it provides 2-3x’s the hydration of water alone. I think it leads people to believe they only need this and 16oz of water.   You still need the fluids to keep your body fluids in check, this just adds in the stuff plain water doesn’t have. Switching between water and Gator/Powerade throughout a long umpiring day does the same thing. Eating a good meal, does the same thing.

Ive seen at some gas stations around me a Gatorlyte product which is basically a premade equivalent.  Also pedilyte is similar.  If you want a quick hitter for electrolytes, this would be good, but again, you still need to take in more fluids than 16oz.

I too have been a proponent of Gatorade/water 50/50.  However, getting older, I'm wondering myself about putting Pedialyte into the mix this year.

I am a long time lurker and don't visit/post too often.  That being said, this type of comment is ridiculous, ignorant and contributes nothing but misguided, worthless opinions.  First, an orthopedic surgeon is still a MD you stumble bum with blood serum levels of more than sodium and potassium on their minds.  Electrolyte's are "in the lane" of all physicians.  Orthopedic surgeons, I mean, I don't know, may be used as team physicians in pro sports, colleges, high school teams.  I mean, maybe, just maybe folks like Dr. Andrews and etc. (orthopedics' all around the country) may just barely be qualified for a advanced topic such as this.  Even an ophthalmologist could treat and speak to this topic.  But let's go with your information online...

Snake oil.. specialty lane... quackery, Give me a break.

Also, for what it is worth, I've used these exact product to hydrate with while officiating and working outside during the heat.  They work fantastic and I've bought them more than once at my local Costco and etc.

Sincerely,

A fellow umpire (licensed medical professional) since we are citing credibility here.

Well I'm not a medical expert either, just a dumb contractor. But when I read crap like "Cellular Transport Technology", my BS meter starts activating. I'm sure Dr. Thomas is more than qualified to develop this drink additive, but it's probably just another version of a "sports drink".

If it works for you, great. I stick with water and proper nutrition. I hydrate and eat something light before most games, and also hydrate during. If I'm doing multiple games, I'll do the same between games.

I don't buy into the whole sports drink thing for most of us that aren't doing that much strenuous work during a game to warrant putting all those empty calories into our bodies. For some people, I'm sure the sports drinks are necessary and work for them. But for the vast majority of us, they are simply not needed. The only thing you are doing is fattening other peoples bank accounts and your waistline.

I bought the Liquid IV at Costco and I like it. There are a few different kinds. One is like Gatorade with the sugars and another is with just electrolytes and no sugar. I got the electrolyte version in guava. I put half a pack in each of the 32 oz jugs I take to the field. Works well.

I have used it before and I like it.  It's certainly beneficial, especially for those hot days where we sweat a lot more than usual.

Side note:  It's very helpful and effective after a long night imbibing in alcoholic beverage, in case you were wondering. :)
