2020 DH Rule Change

Oh no, no, no ... interps and case plays are the gospel and should be adhered to by the letter, no matter if they are obviously wrong by what the actual rule book says!

OK All - This is probably a simple scenario. (During games I'm going to write down on paper the players name and take up two lines so I can keep the roles separate)

NFHS. DH in the Dual Role. (Player/DH)………….My 1st question is in the 5th inning below..... Jones is the same guy....FYI

1st Inning
Jones RF
Jones DH

2nd Inning
Jones RF
Jones DH

3rd Inning (Sub Smith goes in RF & Jones removed from RF)
Smith RF
Jones DH

4th Inning (Jones re-enters in RF & Smith out for game)
Jones RF
Jones DH

5th Inning (Dawson goes in RF & Jones removed from RF 2nd time)
Dawson RF
XXXXX DH - Can Jones Still be the DH in this inning, and the next couple innings?

6th Inning
Dawson RF
Hitter------- I don't know

7th Inning
Dawson RF
Hitter-------- I don't know

My assumptions are that Jones (the DH) never had a pinch runner, or a pinch hitter. So he can still be Hitting?

Or did the removal of Jones from defense the second time remove him from the game and Dawson has to hit?

The second removal takes him out of both positions:

Current year NFHS interps:

"SITUATION 7: Does a player/DH have a re-entry as the defensive player and also a re-entry as the DH? RULING: No, any of the starting players may be removed from the game and re-entered once. The player may not be removed as a defensive player and removed later as the DH and re-enter twice in both capacities. He has one re-entry. (3-1-3)"

"SITUATION 11: Kelly is the LF/ DH. In the third inning, Jones substitutes for Kelly as the left fielder. In the fourth inning Kelly returns as the left fielder. In the fifth inning, Armstrong substitutes for Kelly in left field. May Kelly remain as the DH? RULING: No. Kelly, having been removed from the game twice, is no longer eligible to play in any capacity. The role of the DH has ended since Armstrong now must bat for himself. (3-1-4b)"

BTW, best way to do the lineup is the DH name in one of the 1-9 spots and the same name with fielding position in the 10 spot.

DH position is terminated for the day.

I highlighted in green where the reference was made to a starter having re-entry rights......once.

Wait.  Didn't we have someone - possibly in this very thread - quote some NFHS-approved write-up, where a kid was the player/DH, and was pitching, and was taken out more than once (I don't know how that would work in real life, either), but still stayed in as DH?  And the 'logic' was that being the DH kept him tied into the game?  I thought it was nonsense at the time, and now this latest couple would confirm my instincts were right.

(I will search, but just wanted to throw this post out here.)

Again:  will be spending a lot of time yelling at clouds this year.

Yes indeed. Page two of this thread. It was first thought legal and the we found the rule that says clearly one re entry.

Yes. head coach needs to declare at plate meeting..Straight nine, or designate a Player/DH, or the "traditional" 10 man lineup with a DH
