I need to replace a few shirts. I have older model honigs shirts and have bought a few newer honigs that have a lighter material, feels cooler on hot days. SInce my local honigs went out of business here in Raleigh, NC. Wanted to see what you guys thought are the lightest material shirts for these dog days coming up

The 2016 Majestic panel shirts. My personal favorite. My gray panel Smitty has been contracting some nasty snares , so I'm thinking about just cutting my loss and getting the Majestic version.

Problem is most guys I call with that have pro blue with black collar and black don't have the panel shirts, so I need something that matches them. I have the new hongis with the small stripe on the sides in pro blue and black. I wear the black sometimes with partners that have traditional black shirts, that one is close enough to get away with.

I carry both an OC twin stripe and both colors of the 2010 Majestic. I need a large though, and they're XL. Problem is 2010 majestic shirts aren't the easiest to find. They aren't as light as the 2016 version but they're still better than a Smitty shirt.

What about The Officials Choice? Light, airy, tons of options... cost effective.

The only officials choice shirt I have is that old, soon to be faded twin stripe. I only wear it if my partner only has twin stripe, but it certainly is light.

Don't discount Smitty's shirts based on their older designs.   I have one in the 'vertical stripe' design that I just bought and it is one of the best in the collection that I have, including a Majestic (black with vertical stripes).

Side note... what the heck was up with the Honigs 2010 black and light blue shirts having shorter sleeves than the Honigs undershirts? It has never made sense to me and looks horrible.

Those sleeves were shorter than just about any t-shirt.   I ended up wearing a sleeveless t-shirt whenever I wore those 2010 shirts.

Just looked at their site and they have lots of more up to date options... I own 5-6 of their shirts and love it when I can use them, especially going into summer.

Seriously the dumbest thing ever.

I'm going to venture an educated guess – Honig's, as you know, is an outfitter. While Majestic is the supplier of the shirts and jackets, Honig's is the aggregator and outfitter, taking those components that constitute the MLB Umpires' uniforms and performing custodial duties over them – maintaining, repairing, altering, etc. When it comes to the shirts, of course most of these umpires have two different shirts; one for plate, one for base, each tailored specifically for the role. More often than not, the majority of alterations are done to the sleeves, to shorten and tighten them for base work. More than a few MLB umpires eschew undershirts altogether; most who wear undershirts wear technical-wicking undershirts, ala Nike or New Balance, which have abbreviated sleeves anyway.

So too, most collegiate umpires get noticeably smaller or tighter shirts so as to not be... grossly showed up... by the collegiate participants. If you see any of the NCAA major conference umpires get together for a crew conference, at least 3 out of the 4 are in rather remarkable, trim shape, and look like security at a concert venue. They even have a special stance or posture they adopt during dead-ball time or in-between half-innings! Their shirts most often see the sleeves altered.

With that in mind, Honigs is just "playing to the market". If they are hearing and seeing feedback from their purchasers that off-the-shelf shirts from other vendors are being taken to be altered (or, likely, sent to Honigs to perform the alteration) regarding the sleeves, then they'd be foolish not to consider it, and indeed incorporate it, into their own line of shirts.

Hmmmm.... I say "maybe".   But more likely is that they changed manufacturers  for the cost savings,  and in doing so, found themselves with a product that was altered at the factory  (using less and cheaper material) for the same reason : cost savings.  The end result is a substandard shirt that slowly becomes recognized as such.  Let's face it: most of the products we buy are made for a very small market.

What I dread from year to year is changes in shirt styles, because it means one thing: another set of shirts to buy, and two or three more that won't be worn much again, if ever.

Can any one tell me which shirts have open hemmed sleeves? Medium shirts usually fit me well everywhere except for the arms.  I've got guns like Jim Wolf (no brag really he's just the only umpire I can think of with the same build I have) and want to get the same fit he has on his shirts without the circulation in my arms being cut off.

I had to cut off the sleeves of my honig's tee shirts.  Hard to find mock turtle neck tee shirts.  And I need them because my neck is as thick as my stomach.

Best shirt available are the new Majestic shirts currently being sold on umpattire.com.

There's a reason 10 D1 NCAA conferences and some other local associations have approved MAJESTIC MLB umpire shirts for the 2018 season.

I LOVE this shirt!

Thanks!
