What is considered the proper position for U2 when the infield is in? Stay put in C? Deep C? Behind the players?

I have looked in CCA Manuel under 2 man and can't find it.

I stand in deep C minimum and give up line drives to my partner. Also tell ss not to run in to me as I'm 57 and it takes longer to heal now.

Minor League 2 man manual has you staying in your regular position, moving only left or right if asked by a fielder. P. 145 of the 2015 manual.

New Jersey HS goes strictly by FED and they want us in deep B with Inf in.

My copy of the PBUC manual circa 2012 has the BU move back. Did the ump school explain the reason for the change?

While they didn't specifically say why, they were adamant about how crucial starting positions were to establish proper angles. I suspect that was the impetus for the change. They would constantly hammer us on starting positions, angles, and positioning. They maintained that without the proper starting position, it would throw your angles off, and thus your positioning for plays. It did make sense and I felt their methodology worked really well.

I admit that in practice, it does take some getting used to with the SS so close to you, particularly when with R3 only and I'm trying to do a post pitch step.

I have seen both done, I move up in C - still in front and closer to working area. Be careful not to get behind the mound, as a ball off the mound is unpredictable. This is what I have been told in clinics. In 3-man then go deeper.

Regular C.

Deep C.

Deep B.

Even "shallow" C.

All are "proper."

A, D, regular B, are "improper."

Not always (level dependent) but usually, I play a deep B in this situation. Same position as I would be in 3 man as U3 with R1. If the ball is hit in the infield, the play is at home. I can then adjust easily for the 2nd play at 1st.

Play doesn't always go home, it can go anywhere. The hope is for the ball to go home, but if the play takes an infielder towards another base and takes away the play home, how do you cover it? Not saying it's wrong, but just wondering?

The same way you cover it if yo are starting in normal B or normal C -- you move to where you need to be (usually toward the working area) and make the call.

Why B?

I'm not sure.  I understand getting deeper as far as it keeps the infielders in your line of sight. The difference from Deep C to deep B isn't much.   Personally, I think wherever you set up with infield in, the philosophy is the same....Be careful to stay out of the way of the middle infielders.

But also be aware of who is holding who and where a backpick might happen. If the ball is not hit I'm moving if the catcher is up and throwing to other than the pitcher. I'm in deep "C" until I get burned by whatever situation that might happen or you can postulate.

And I still stay in deep C.

What do you like about deep C that differs from deep B?

I like the angles and the proximity to where I probably need to be more.

I like to be even or behind fielders to take interference out. Stay at an angle you can see back pick at 3B and where you an easily move for a play at 1B if they freeze runner.

A partner and I were discussing this not too long ago in our post game. Here's my opinion...

I'm going to base my position on the fielders position when they are playing in.

As long as I feel safe, I'm also coming in. Once they creep in to the point where I'm either at the mound or just don't feel I could dodge a baseball coming for me, then I'll give it up to my partner.

I feel too many guys give it up too quickly and as soon as the infielders play the slightest bit in, they go on the outside.
