Hello,

Pleasure joining the group. Looking forward to your posts. My name is Tee. I umpire  occasionally all the various ages 7u - adults.

I always enjoyed a good plate meeting :)  What are some of your top bullets to cover during at plate managers meeting routine?

  • Players legally equipped
  • Tell coaches that if they come out to protest a call and I get with my partner that the conference won't start until they return to the dugout and once a final call is made they are not able to come back out and argue the call

I used to have a big spiel but mines down too:

Coaches we're under Utrip rules. We have an hour fifty, 6 inning, or 15 and 8 after 3 and 4. Are all your players properly and legally equipped? Let's play ball.

We all introduce each other.

Home coach goes over ground rules.

We ask if they're legally equipped.

Ask for questions.

Shake hands and go about our bizness.

now whats the most absurd ground rule...?   One time I saw a crew calling the tree hanging over RF in fair territory,  a dead ball, ground rule single.

That's awful.

Well, the one JV field, another umpire said that they recently banned peeing in the outfield (no fence, has a small woods area) woods, because the girls cross country was running through there.

#11...Very important...especially at those 12 and under games. :nod::wink:

I was waiting for someone to say that the best thing about #11 is that each year you get older but the moms always stay the same age.

Drat. Now I ruined waiting for someone to say it.

FED:

Shake hands - good to see you again. (I already know coaches names before arriving)
The majority of the time, this is where I ask the coaches to please have their players get in the dugout
Take home lineup card.  Check for duplicate numbers.  Confirm DH and who he's batting for.  Are all subs listed?  Are all players properly equipped?  Is all equipment legal?
Ditto for visitor lineup card.
John, please walk us around (ground rules)
CIF would like us to remind you that the field is an extension of the classroom, and for each of us to set an example of good sportsmanship.
Good luck gentlemen.

Unless the ground rules are particularly long, the entire meeting takes 3-4 minutes.

College is the same with the exception of getting the players in the dugout, the properly equipped question, and the sportsmanship stuff.

Here in beautiful NJ, we get to recite this little speech to coaches and team captains before we get to our regular pregame business.

"There will be no tolerance for negative statements or actions between opposing players and coaches.  This includes Taunting, Baiting, Berating Opponents, Trash-Talking or actions which ridicule or cause embarrassment to them.  Any Verbal, Written or Physical Conduct related to Race, Gender, Ethnicity, Disability, Sexual Orientation or Religion shall NOT be tolerated, could subject the violator to Ejection, and may result in Penalties being assessed against your Team.  If such comments are heard a penalty will be assessed immediately.  We have been instructed not to issue warnings.  It is Your responsibility (Coaches and Captains) to remind your team of this Policy."

I can't ... you .... that's just awful.

That paragraph alone would take me longer than my usual plate meeting, even for places that have some weird ground rules.

Wow. This is like the Riot Act or Miranda Rights! Do you have to pull out a cue card and state it verbatim?

"Written Conduct"???? Goodness. Only in New Jersey! I'm sure that, if it wasn't in the terms, you'd have a Jersey coach grab a clipboard and write "Holy Sh!t, You Suck" on it to show you, and feel perfectly at liberty to do so.

Oh, and have you got odd ground rules? Add 'em to the list! -

Asa a matter of fact, yeah, we do. I almost don't need the card anymore.

Seems legit. Haha

at one point I had written down a ton of bullet points on index cards and practiced them like my strike 3 call...

Here is one of my bullet points that always gets some chuckles or chatter from coaches.

"Coaches, we are both very approachable humans(I used to say gentlemen until I worked with an excellent young lady), but I expect you to approach us accordingly. If you feel we have gotten a rule interpretation ruling incorrect, please. Wait for the play to die down, ask for time, and go to the official who made the call. Any judgment calls, just stay in your dugout. They Are Final."

:D
