That's assigned to the foul line umps I think. It's not U2.

I'm not talking about how some regions or WP does it, I'm talking about the right way to do it.

Shouldn't be solely the line umpires covering the outfield.

If there's a diving catch away from the LFU made by F7 moving to his left, U2 has the best look. It opens right to him.

Meanwhile, the infield umpires rotate as in 4-man.

The purpose of 6-man is to improve outfield coverage, not anchor the infield umpires to their bases.

No desire to get inside. How would that be a better look in 99% of the plays?

Outside is where we want to be whether U1, U2, U3 or PU if we have the luxury of not having to cover a subsequent base.

Well based on the camera angle it seems to this layman that when outside, the view is blocked by the leg sliding in, so in theory the foot is at the back corner of the bag and the glove is down in the front of the bag and totally misses the runner.

Thanks for for the insight.

I'm pretty sure the purpose of 6-man at Williamsport is to give more volunteers a chance to be on TV.

Thanks for for the insight.

On plays at the plate, the umpire takes them form "outside" -- 3BX and then moving based on  the play.

Why wouldn't' they do the same at the other bases if they had a chance?  And, yes, it requires some movement based on reading the play, and some practice which we don't usually get on a regular basis.

Even in 3-person, we might move from inside to outside, if we get a chance and the rest of the plays can be covered.

And, sure, you can always find some play where it would have been better to be inside -- mut the majority are better covered from the outside -- ifit doesn't compromise other aspects of the coverage.

(So, all that said, why are steals still taken from the inside, even in 4-person?)  ;)

It may be the right way but you shouldn't criticize a LL umpire for doing it the LL way.

I'm not criticizing the umpire.

I'm criticizing the system. Complete lack of reading plays that comes from the system.

Running away from potential trouble balls cause ball outside, umpire inside is the cookie cutter, spot way to umpire.

Having spent 40 years watching small diamond ball I think it is OK. Nothing is very far away on the small diamond.

Watching.

I've spent 30 years umpiring it. Perhaps my viewpoint should mean something.

Angle over distance, always.

Don't have a link or know which game it was but heard the blues put a batter on 3rd on what would be a routine 6-3 ground out that went out of play on the throw.

Why don't you do the research and get back to us on where and when. Aren't the games recorded on ESPN?

I saw that play and thought that the runner should be at 2nd as the ball rolled behind the protective fence.  Pretty sure it was the Nevada/So Cal game.

this is the link to ESPN

I can't watch in the office due to firewall, however, pretty sure it's in there.

Scorebook for that game shows only 3 runners at 3B, all SoCal, and they didn't get there all at once.

I looked at the play-by-play and didn't see any errors where the BR ended up on third base.  Must have been a different game.

sorry for the wasted effort guys.  I know it was at a field where they built a fence in front of the dugout entrance, I only recalled that at the Cali location.

I can't remember how many times (back when I was starting out) I was told by a veteran that their way was the "correct" way.  My first two seasons were VERY frustrating because I was trying to learn and improve, but I received LOTS of conflicting information.  I seemed that some umpires were just on a power trip.  Over time I was able to figure out who knew what they were talking about and who didn't.

The problem arises when these types of umpires get into positions of power that hold undue influence on someone else's career.

Just my experiences. YMMV.

It's not just that they are veterans. It's the guys that have been umpiring for years yet refuse to attend a camp to learn the new ways.
Some of us veterans attend yearly clinics. And I'm not talking about your little 2 hour association field clinic. Attend a reputable clinic.

So I can actually watch one of these games tonite.....

HPU in TN/KY game seems to have good positioning behind the plate, a consistent zone, really good timing, and is communicating with the catchers and batters. He isn't overly demonstrative and looks likes he belongs there.

And in the bottom of the 3rd he rotated in front of home plate to stay in the wedge on a play at the plate!

Glad to see it!

To bad U2 looked like he was stuck in the mud when he should have been getting position for 2 bangers at 2nd.
