Just curious to hear of how some of you guys do the called 3rd strike?  I have changed the way I do it a couple of times and have heard both positive and negative feedback on my new way.  Use to do the hammer and pull the string, but now I just punch it with my right arm across body with a karatee (sp) sound.  Slowed it down a bit before the call to make sure it was caught by cathcer.  I looked a bit silly doing it on a uncaught 3rd strike, so learned my lesson and slowed it down a bit.

The big dogs that come to our clinic say that the strike 3 call should be two sounds and it should be distinct from your regular strike call.  I step back with my right foot and pull the chain out in front of me facing forward.

I use a '2 stage' call, loud, distinct. 'hiiiiiiiiike he!' (strike 3) - right arm goes up in a kind of reverse karate chop, then rejoins left hand, and then I then pull with the right as I step back with the right leg, and jab slightly with the left. It happens very quickly, despite how long the description seems.

Coaches and players seem to appreciate the distinction, though my motivation is sound mechanics and an authoritative, confident expression that shows I have no doubt about the call.

Stand up then one step back with right leg , almost in one continuous motion. Drop Hammer in front with loud STRIIIIKE! then bring both hands down like breaking a stick in half with my hands. THREEEEEE!

One pitcher I have worked several times says he likes it.  His description:  You stick it in........then you break if off.

My strike-call is trademark, and has been likened to the goal horn at a hockey game. It rolls out as "STREEOOOOOOOOOOOOOKE".

The third-strike-looking starts with a very sharp, compact call of "STRIKETHREE!"... I only pull the chain once I see that it is a caught third strike, much to @BillKen's and your own point.

I've been breaking down Tom Hallion's Twist-Punch Reverse-K move, and am strongly considering trying it, just to try something different. ;)

Karate is old news. With today's ballplayers (and coaches), you might want to consider Muay Thai or Krav Maga. :D

I prefer a karate kid esque crane kick to the batter's face followed by a "Peoples Elbow" to the back of their head as I yell Strike 3!!

That gets you branded as a smitty around here.  Especially at HS and above.

That's interesting to hear that. i've been to one clinic where they wanted a 2 stage verbal but all the other clinics have said just give one verbal. Add that to the long list of things that supervisors have different opinions on.

I just stand there, give a real loud "Pfft!" then say to the batter in a condescending tone, "Hey!  Go sit down."  It's been met with some mostly negative feedback so far.  But I keep doing it because I'm no quitter.

WHOOP! THERE IT IS!

If you shake what you got while saying it, you get extra style points.

A called third strike is ABSOLUTELY the time to let your freak flag fly.

Only for those with no aspirations to move up beyond 13U, at least not around here.

Whatever you feel comfortable doing.

I stand, take a step back and crisply pull the chain saw.......I do not do anything overly dramatic, comedic nor do I emulate our Pro brothers....The batter knows he struck out, the team knows, the fans know, the hot dog vendors know....I don't do anything that would add embarrassment to that.....My goal with all my calls is to make them as crisp and professional as I can.......

I cringe every time I walk through a complex and hear and see an umpire do an "over the top" strike 3 mechanic on a 12 year old kid......
