So I've seen:

Black

Powder blue

The "Sport coat" behind the Plate.

Wind breaker type jackets on the bases.

Who decides what will be the uniform of the day?

As to the Sport Coat behind the plate... is that a Sunday only thing or just some guys like to wear it or ?

Yes.

Some have the "rule" that if the game will (likely) end after dark, wear it.

I just think the blazer looks better, honestly. I'd wear it whenever possible. Tbh it's way more attractive than those striped jackets. Cooler, drier day weather would be optimal for wearing one too, not just late afternoon/night games.

@stl_ump – Not out and out correcting you, champ... just... enhancing it.

– Major League Black (currently, black with vertical single white stripe up both flanks, and a single white stripe on each sleeve cuff; also available in long-sleeve version)

– - New prototype Black (all black, with no further embellishments; used by "test" crews)

– - Classic Black (two white pinstripes on collar, and on each sleeve cuff; Dale Scott and several others have been seen to wear this in a long-sleeve version)

– Major League Sky (currently, sky-blue (please don't call it powder) with vertical single black stripe up both flanks, and a single black stripe on each sleeve cuff)

– Plate Coat (aka Blazer, Sportcoat, etc.; all-black)

– Cool-Base Convertible Jacket (all-black, 1/4-zip, with zip-off sleeves)

– Therma-Base Jacket (black, 1/2-zip, w/ Sky blue and white shoulder stripes)

Personally, I bought a long-sleeved ML black shirt, and, as much as it pained me to do so, a long-sleeved navy shirt expressly for fall ball. I _refuse_ to wear a jacket behind the plate. I'll wear a jacket on the bases, but my partners and most coaches know I'll hold out as long as possible without it (I'm a farm kid from Wisconsin!). I am going to pick up a CB Convertible jacket on sale, though. Very very soon... Because I have this hunch we're going to have a September with some bite to the air.

I will, though, absolutely rock a Plate Coat. If I remember right, it's @Mr Ump who has one, and looks like the pinnacle of professionalism. I have been bequeathed the use of a navy one by a fellow retiring umpire in my area. We're terming it "Lend/Lease"... Now I just have to find a black one, or try to copy this one.

@MadMax  .....  the Majestic Cool Base is a great jacket .......VERY versatile jacket ....w/ layers underneath .....PLENTY WARM on cooler days, especially if foggy, or misty, or a light rain.....I love rocking that on the dish in the right conditions

I would love to wear a Plate Coat. The only problem is in Southern California, I would get to wear it 1 week out of the year.

I thought we did not wear jackets behind the dish.

@Jimurray – _I_ said I don't wear jackets behind the plate. What Jeff (@Thunderheads) does is his own shibang. Besides, Michigan is more desolate than Wisconsin. ;)

@Thunderheads – How do the CB Convertible jackets run, size-wise? I have a Majestic MLB Black shirt, size XL, obviously for plate-work. If I was to get another for base/field work, I'd get a Large. Do those jackets run generous or right-on?

You don't have to size up .... if you're an XL, get an XL, they are sized GENEROUS for gear!  If I didn't wear it on the plate, I could wear a L in this jacket!

No, but I thought I heard it at a clinic or on one of these threads. Most of the time in MLB I see BUs in jackets "untucked" and the PU in a long sleeve shirt "tucked" over whatever keeps him warm. Do you tuck your jacket behind the plate?

It's area / league dependent so you might well have heard it.

Probably depends on who has enough "power" to make any declaration and how much he or she cares about the issue.

If I, personally, had enough power, I would probably say very little about it and leave it up to the crew.

The Coolbase convertible jacket runs big. It's probably sized for the plate. I got a large last year. It fits okay but I could probably wear a medium on the bases, which is where I wear it most of the time.

Agreed.  I wear an XL shirt on the bases, and they are also large enough for me to wear on the plate.  I bought a Medium in the CB convertible since I won't ever wear it on the plate, and it's perfect for the bases.

A few years ago I went to Tony Thompson's 3 Man Camp in Atlanta.  Apparently the local custom there is to wear the jackets tucked in, bases and plate.  We were gathering up in the hotel the morning we went to the field and Ed Rapuano, one of the MLB instructors was holding court with jokes and stories when one of the local guys comes in with the jacket tucked and Ed says "WaddaWeGotHeeeeaaaah?  A F*#Kin' tuckah?  You tuck your F*#Kin' jacket in on the bases?  WhatTheF*#K!"  Or something close.

It was a great laugh for us all and then Ed apologized, told the guy he looked very professional and stated, "I'm just bustin' your balls!" with a laugh.

It was great.  I have done both.  Now, with the Majestic ThermaBase, which I only wear behind the plate when it is 35 or less degrees here in the blustery midwest, I cannot tuck it in so no worries.

I say do what your assigner wants, if he cares.  If not, then do what you want.

Thunderheads, is the Majestic TMJ wind jacket suitable for wearing behind the plate?
