As a lifelong and heavily invested Brewers fan, I've gotta defend GoGo a little bit. Yeah, he probably has a screw loose, but like any other professional (or amateur, for that matter) sport, if you show a fallible nerve, every opponent is going to try and press it.

The incident against the Braves, wherein Brian McCann obstructed (prevented) GoGo's completion of his Home Run, has a backstory. The specifics of it I do not fully know, but do note that Paul Maholm debuted with the Pirates and also pitched for the Cubs, so he's faced the Brewers and GoGo several times before. GoGo's beef has to be with Maholm (if you notice from the 2013 video), because notice how aggressive Reed Johnson gets... why is this significant? Reed Johnson and Paul Maholm got traded to Atlanta from Chicago together.

Gomez's bat-flip is no more grandstanding than any other premier slugger. It's not like the bat ends up in the opponent dugout, or in the catcher's lap. Carlos just isn't known to be a premier slugger, as the development of his home run -hitting ability has been a recent undertaking. Any Brewers fan will concede, though, that GoGo has a habit of muttering and saying stuff _while_ he's running the basepaths though, and I'm sure that's somewhere at the heart of the matter. Garrit Cole is a big ole' gasser for the Pirates, and I'm sure Cole got a bit peeved at GoGo coasting on the approach to 1B ... for a ball off the wall. Carlos now has a reputation within the league, and of course any opponent is going to try and trip that trigger.

Yep. McCann, to be exact.

oh, ok

Uh, no. McCann didn't "instigate" it. GoGo's issue is/was with Maholm, and as I said, I have a hunch it goes back to a Cubs-Brewers game in early 2013 or even 2012. GoGo was boring holes through Maholm all during the at-bat, and when he uncorked it into the seats, he was lettin' the pitcher have it all during the trot around the bases. If McCann had "instigated it", GoGo wasn't aware of that, because after he rounds 3B, he's genuinely _shocked_ to see McCann obstructing his path.

If we fast-forward to what happened yesterday, GoGo was more or less jawing with Garrit Cole, and it only came to blows after Travis Snider (from off the bench) squared off with Gomez.

Geez, Colbreath is a big dude.

You want a bat-flip?  I'll give you a bat-flip:

Both incidents were instigated and escalated by the opposition.

Wrong.  Gomez admitted he instigated the fracas in Atlanta.

I would like to apologize first to the fans, MLB, my teammates and the Brewers organization as well as the Braves organization.

The way I carried myself on the field is unacceptable, I should have done better to control myself and set a good example.

That's admitting he started it? Not so much.

I think baseball needs to change more than Gomez. Cole gets in his face and he's just supposed to stand there. Sorry.

Cole said something to him from a decent distance, ...I'm not sure "gets in his face" is an accurate portayal .... on edit, that being said .... Cole did mouth off at him pretty good, you can hear it in the clip actually ....

Agreed. The silly, antiquated "code" needs to change. If Cole doesn't like someone hitting a triple off of him, quit throwing it there. Besides, Cole should be happy it wasn't a home run.

Everybody but Cole got suspended and he started the entire thing.  Can't make it up.

I'm not surprised.

I have no issues with any of the suspensions except Snider's. He's the cause of it turning physical, and got the least of the suspensions. SMH.

Five games for cold cocking a guy? I am a Brewer fan (glad it is only 5), but if MLB was serious, that should be a lot longer.......

Remember, Cueto only got 7 for what he did.

Gomez came off the base after being mouthed at by Cole.  He could've mouthed right back from the base....he chose to vacate the base and carry it further.  Dude has "self admittedly" got some issues.

And none of this would have happened had Cole not run his mouth and approached him. And we wouldn't be talking about this if Snider sat his happy ass on the bench where it belonged instead of starting a physical fight.

There's plenty of blame to go around.

Just pointing out, that he (Gomez) escalated the incident.  I agree, plenty of blame.  Lot of people did wrong here, I just think that Gomez is definitely one of them.

No, Cole escalated the incident.

disagree.

Gomez taking off his helmet and coming off of 3rd to approach Cole actually excalated it.  Not saying that Cole was right, but ........

Gomez allegedly started it.  Cole charged him at third base shouting obscenities...charging somebody throwing obscenities in their direction is escalating in my book.

Then Gomez was walking away and some other a$$hat from Pittsburgh probably started shouting at him in spanish which made him do what he did.

Did he overreact?  Sure.  But it's not all on him.
