I am returning to umpiring after many years away from the game, and am buying all new gear.  After a lot of research (mostly reading this forum) I have settled on either the Gold or Platinum CP, and would like to get some opinions of the differences between the two.  The cost difference isn't enough to sway me one way or the other, so I'm mainly looking into fit and protection issues.  I'm 5-9, 200#, so yes, I have a bit of a gut which I'm trying to lose.  I realize a lot of this has probably been talked to death, but I appreciate any input you gear gurus can provide.

I went with the platinum since I got a great deal on the CP and shin guards. I'm about 6'1 200lbs and it fits great with a good amount of protection. Haven't taken any shots in the gut, but have had a decent amount of balls off the chest and shins and didn't feel a thing. Can't quite tell you what the differences between the two are, but I do love my platinum. Definitely a lot of confidence in my gear behind the plate. Hope this helps a bit.

I have worn neither so I can't directly answer your question, but I did type "gold vs. platinum" in the search box and got a lot of hits, so if I were you I would start there as there are many threads which should answer the exact question you asked.

I remember many ot these threads from when I joined and was looking for a hard shell CP.  I went with a Douglas though, not the Gold or Platinum.

I chose the Gold because it was a few dollars more than the Platinum so I figured it must be better.

Gold and Plantinum chest protector comparison
Besides the obvious differences in color and price, there are a few, minimal size and protection differences.

The Gold offers three size options based on chest sizes allowing for a closer fit in larger and smaller umpires and gives you one more inch in the largest size than the largest platinum.

While the Gold has slightly thicker padding, a little more shoulder protection and more contouring around the clavicle, the Platinum has additional upper sternum/neck protection.

Yes, couldn't help throwing in my .02.  I usually just confine myself to reading what you guys post and research.  Not coming from a baseball background myself, what Warren and you guys are doing here has been a huge help to me and I would say the profession as a whole.  Great job!!!!!!

I have both. I like the Platinum, because of it's superiour collarbone protection. That one piece of plastic, that goes from chest to over your shoulder, offers the best solution of any rig out there, IMO.

I wear my Gold for lower level games, as it's a little less bulky on me.

For me, this comparison is like "do you like Mercedes or BMW?" I prefer the gold, because when you get the proper size, it will fit like a glove. The platinum for me was a tad bit bulky, However, I never had the opportunity to try the smaller sized platinum. Either way you can’t lose.
