You all know how the hand-on-catcher's-back is done at the professional level, but not recommended.

Well THIS is going to be the newest and greatest mechanic to hit MLB... Think it should be done in amateur ball? It is slated to begin right about the same time MLB strikes a contract with the mask hook! LOL

Yes, that guys been plunked one time too many........that's all defensive in nature.......young catcher is afraid to get close, and is using that glove as a shield........

Well, the first thing the umpire is doing wrong is allowing a left handed catcher.

Yeah...because he has the choice...

Someone has to choose. Hopefully he has a clue...My first year daddy coaching I had a left-handed kid who never played baseball before and from the looks of it, never played catch before either. After a few weeks watching this kid throw left-handed like I throw left-handed, I ask him to take off his glove and throw the ball with his right hand...I couldn't believe the improvement. I had to talk to clueless dad and tell him his kid isn't left-handed.

Things can happen. When my son played , he wrote left and batted left but fielded right.

I remember playing as a kid, and though I wasn't consciously scared of the ball, I did tend to side-step as a throw reached me and hangs the glove out there. It almost looks like the unpire's trying to do the same thing here, except using the catcher as the glove/human shield. An surely the team's got right-handed players that can not block the ball who could play catcher. Sure, if he plays like he's got a black hole for a glove and a particle accelerator for an arm, think about putting a leftie behind the dish. But otherwise...

I know I did that the few years I played LL. The first game I ever worked was right after a rather nasty MLB incident where an umpire had caught a foul to unprotected skin and I was terrified. Once I relaxed I stopped trying to keep my motions matched to the catcher, but if he's worked more than a few games he shouldn't be doing that.

That catcher is what I call a " Chase the ball to the screen person" not the catcher.

You can simplify the terms by just calling him a "misser" instead of a "Chase the ball to the screen person"  :rollinglaugh: @mstaylor
