Season ending day

Looks like the season has come to a close for me. I worked four travel ball games today, and closed out the season by working with @Jocko. Had a great time, and saw quite possibly the worst team I have ever seen. Ask Jocko how well the left-handed catcher worked out for him lol. Time to break everything down, clean it up, and put it away. Then wait for January to roll around, and meetings begin again.

I did my last fall game a week ago today... I got a call from my winter assigner a couple days before then asking if I could do some games for him at the same time!

 

Not sure when my next game will be, but I'm in the process of between-season cleaning now! I do a big clean between each of the four seasons of ball.

I've got a few more weeks left and then I'll be ending the season as well. The LH catcher reminded me of a game I had a few weeks ago. When walking onto the field I saw in the dugout a really nice set of All-Star catching gear in all white and was customized to the tee. The kind of gear that only the elite of the elite would wear. I made a comment to my partner about it who had the plate and we both thought that he got lucky and was gunna have an awesome catcher to work with. The 3 games we had before were all really good games and we had been calling some pretty good ball all day long up to that point. The team with the white gear in the dugout ended up being the home team and the catcher came out with his glove tucked under his arm. He stood behind the plate then put his glove on his right hand. I looked at my partner and he shook his head. We didn't even have to say anything. It became pretty apparent very quickly that this catcher just had a rich daddy who would buy him whatever he wanted and told him how great he was. We only got through one inning in that game before we had a 20 after 1 run rule. Final score 28-0. Only bad game we had all day but just goes to show that you are SOL when you've got a LH catcher.

Getting dressed for the plate I was going to put my cup on it had to use the restroom before the game started. So I put my cup in the ball bag instead. Went to the restroom then on to the plate meeting. Coach Hans me some baseballs and I go to put them in my bag and I'm like oh $hit forgot to put on my cup! For 1 second I thought about the scissors but Mikes name popped into my head. I said no way! I sucked it up and boxed it for the first 1/2 inning. Then I stepped in dugout and put the cup on.

Brave man..I think I would have "stepped into the dugout" BEFORE the 1st half inning.

I actually boxed for ten years and never wore a cup. It wasn't until I started HS ball that I decided the law of averages were bound to get me. Still haven't gotten hit but I do wear a cup now.

I thought that scissors guys didn't need a cup for the "other" reason.

 

Experiences of this box guy:

Inside pitch, B swing, F2 assumes a batted ball-doesn't bother putting leather on the pitch, CLANG

I beg to differ with your opinion on a LH catcher...I have been behind a LH catcher many times and have not had an issue.  My son is left handed and is an outstanding LH catcher.  He is only 13 yrs old and has had several college coaches inquire about him when he was playing up in a 16U tournament, but due to his age could not actually offer him anything right now. He threw 4 out of 4 baserunners out at second.  I know that playing catcher is tough for a LH, but when he is one of the better 16U players, you put him where you have to.  He could have played 1B and CF where he is much better, but the C positon needed to be filled by someone who is not afraid to block balls in the dirt.  Just saying took offense to your comment "just goes to show that you are SOL when you've got a LH catcher".

I don't see LH catchers having any inherent problems playing the position as compared to RH catchers.  It's not like trying to put a LH at F4, F5 or F6 which is a big disadvantage.

 

The only disadvantage I can see is that a LH might present a different look to the umpire, which may cause him problems with his zone.  It shouldn't, but it might.

Grayhawk - I agree with what you said about the only disadvantage is that a LH catcher might present a different look to the PU.  The PU will just need to adjust to the situation at hand. I must say the first time I had a LH catcher, it took me a couple of innings to get used to him when he came up throwing.  Now, regardless LH or RH, I know how to re-position myself behind the plate.  When the pitcher is warming up, I got into position on the 6th-8th pitch just to see what I needed to do when the LH catcher threw down to 2B.  Better to do it in the warmup that in game situation. It helped me.

Looks as if I was mistaken. I didn't end the season Sunday, after all. I worked a 9 inning intrasquad game at UAB today. Had a ball.
