I feel he has done a great job with baseball. Can't blame the strike on him. And I would never let Pete Rose in the HOF under any circumstances.

I was going to say Gary Bettman was the worst commissioner, but I don't follow the NBA, so you may be right.  I just know that, in general, hockey fans hate Bettman.

Huh...I would make that exact post, except exactly opposite on each point.

Good riddance, Pud.

Why?

1. The longest run a labor peace without a work stoppage among the big 4 sports.

2. The toughest drug policy of all 4 major sports.

3. He's grown the game, it's attendance, and it's revenues to record highs.

4.He's been instrumental in many cities securing new stadiums.

5. Added a wild card in '95, and made it better, IMO, with a 2nd WC and a one game playoff.

6. Hasn't budged on letting a man who gambled on his own team into the HOF. A man who had plenty chance to come clean and denied denied denied.

I think there are good things to his credit and bad things... One thing that hasn't been mentioned was the all star game tie and the lame home field advantage rule that he tried to use to compensate. Two wrongs don't make a right.

He definitely isn't the worst commissioner ever, and I'd argue he's the second best of the big four currently. He's behind Goodell for sure, but ahead of Stern, and eons ahead of Bettman... Bettman literally took a nationwide sport in the early 2000s, and made people hate it via two lockouts... And when he had a chance to make things better and get a contract with ESPN recently to start regaining that national exposure, he chose to instead signa TEN YEAR contract with Versus or NBC Sports Network, a channel not all programs even get! This isn't even mentioning the idiotic rule changes he has put in place and the random number generator used for suspensions. But I digress.

I've heard Dave Dombrowski's name thrown around as the next commish. That'd be interesting, I think he'd be good.

1. Look at what shape baseball is now compared to when he took over. Was the strike his fault? I don't think so. Labor peace? Yes. 2. As far as Pete Rose goes, he committed the cardinal sin of baseball. Gambling. There are signs in every professional baseball locker room that gambling on baseball games is illegal and if you are caught, you are banned. Of course Pete says that he didn't bet against his own team, but he also said he didn't gamble on baseball. It took him from 1989 until 2004 to admit that. What commissioner in his right mind would ban Pete Rose if he weren't guilty of sin? I guarantee you he probably bet against his teams. All he would have to do is not put in the right relief pitcher, not put on the hit and run, etc.. You can't ban somebody for accusations. 3. The NBA was going under and Donald Stern took it over and turned it around.

I personally could care less about who wins the All-Star game. It's an exhibition game, just like spring training. No need to take the catcher out in this game and ruin his career. I umpired a Cape Cod League All-Star team vs Team USA in 2000 and they stopped it after 12 innings because Cape had no more pitching. Big Deal.

Amen on every single point.

So it's OK to bet on your own games even though it's been against the rules and duly posted in every clubhouse for nearly a century?

No kidding.

I agree actually in not caring who wins, and I think the majority of baseball fans would agree as well... But I think that the sentiment is for there to be *A* winner, regardless of who it is... I don't care if we have a home run derby to declare a winner, someone just needs to win, no ties in baseball... So Selig did two things...

1. Allowed the 2002 All Star Game to end in said tie, which fans hated because a baseball game should always have a winner.

2. When this didn't work, he gave home field advantage in the World Series to the winning league in the all star game, which fans hate because the game is an exhibition, and we shouldn't care who wins.

I'll take "inferences from what NO ONE has said" for $100. Pete the manager should forever be banned from baseball. These allegations didn't come from Pete the player. And baseball <> Hall of Fame, except where the HOF has chosen to make it so.

I agree with his abilities as a player, but Pete has no one to blame but himself. Banned means banned. He shot himself in the foot and that foot will probably never grow back. Unless Bud Selig becomes a miracle healer at the very end of his time as commissioner. Then what excuse would people have to hate him?

Just announced: Bud Selig to resign at end of 2014 season. Details forthcoming...

Thank God!  The best news of the season bar none.

Maybe the better news is that He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named announced his retirement and that Scully will be around next year.

Very true and very good points.

I do not have a favorable opinion of him (I know he is crying on the inside after reading this).

I just do not trust him. IMO he talks out of both sides of his mouth about umpiring and instant replay. I also feel that he has stood a firm ground on issues like Pete Rose, but not so much on other issues (A-Rod comes to mind most recently. He has the power to not allow him to play through his appeal)

But he did have some strengths and I believe the sport is better off now than when he came in.It will be interesting to see who will be next.

^^^ We have strict standards of not allowing foul, offensive or abusive language so I added it to the obscene word filter.

It's hysterical. I know he spews out garbage from his long list of experiences, but this takes the cake. It's so funny! Thanks for the daily laughs!

Not so much talking out of both sides of his mouth. He is there to represent all of MLB. And I'm not so sure he has the power to not allow ARod to play during the appeal process. If I was ARod I would fight also. It didn't seem to bother MLB when he was the top dog, and now they are using him as a scapegoat. Remember, if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'.
