One of the checks I received from a team bounced when I deposited it. The deposit was three weeks after the game was played.

I received the original assignment through an assigner who has a great many clients throughout the area.

I contacted the manager via e-mail providing my home address and phone number, and he said he would get me another check plus the bank fees and made some excuse about a deposit not being credited.. I waited a week. No check came. I once again connected him via e-mail (I have no phone number for him). I waited a week. No check came.

I do not want to be a prick, but I would like to be paid.

At this point I would go to your association. Maybe your assigner, maybe somebody else to deals w/ these issues. I'm sure you're not the first one in your group who has ever had an issue of this nature.

Often times, teams just don't think that you having to wait for your money is a big deal.

I'm sure you'll get paid, plus your fees, but now it seems as though you've done all you can do except go to your association for support.

You have contacted the manager twice and two weeks have passed with no money and (I believe) no communication. I think getting the assignor involved at this point would be reasonable.

kevin - he owes me also and told me the same thing about getting a check out..i just emailed him again today (im sure its the same place)..

the problem is is that these are indendent games...while most of us are in the high school association, these games have nithing to do with that..and this team that has bounced the checks in not a team that the assignor has a relationship with - they have been the visiting team...

If I get a check for a game thats not from one of my assignors (team, personal, etc) I always go to the bank that issued it and cash it.

That way, if it's not good there isn't any bank fees you're going to get jammed up with.

I loved the games where I got paid in cold hard cash, at home plate, before the game started.

okay, then email the umpires who would work the independent games and tell them to be aware of the bounced check. pretty soon nobody will work their games unless they're paid cash.

If I have a problem like that, I go through my assigner, 99% of the time he takes care of it. I have even had the association pay me for a game or two I got stiffed on but over the years have lossed a few fees in the mix. I just figure it's part of doing business.

After posting this, I see where you said it was an independant game, sorry.

I would definitely contact the assigner. And get a phone # for the offender. Hed get a call every other day for a week. Then a call a day until I got paid. And IF you accept games for them in the future, insist on cash. We don't work for free (some of yall do)

If it's the same team I'm thinking of, we got an email from our assigner saying don't take checks from this team. Unfortunately, that e-mail probably came after Kevin's game. Word's out on this team now.

There's always the nuclear option of talking to the district attorney's office. I'm sure they would love to know about multiple bad checks being passed.

We take our "unrecoverable" checks to the Sheriff Dept here. This has worked 100% of the time for me, but it is kind of a nuclear option in that they tack on a huge fee for the person who wrote the bad check-the coach will not be happy with you.

In your voice message you can say that the final option will be to contact the local sheriff's office. If you still don't get paid, they left you w/ no other choice.

There's no reason at all for him to care what this coach thinks of him! Passing bad checks is a crime that needs to be dealt with. I wouldn't wait another day before contacting the authorities. I might cut the guy some slack if this had been an isolated incident, but this appears to be a pattern with the guy.

That happened to me once.

Our MABF rules/by-laws state that we're to be paid, in cash, on the field prior to the game. A few of the teams issue checks because they say they're a 503© entity. When I happen upon one, I tell them that's okay, but, I'm an independent contractor and I get paid in cash prior to working the game. They usually dig into their wallets and pay cash...the way they're supposed to.

Fool me once, shame on you! Fool me twice, shame on me!!

I would do what Jocko said, Call this guy every day and demand your money. Be the squeaky wheel. Send the guy a demand letter. You can download a demand letter template from the internet. Pester him and you will get paid. Then never ever umpire one of his games again.

For the teams that say they have to write checks for tax status, fine, write it and cash it. It leaves the paper trail but gets you cash. We do it in the concert business all the time. You write the artist a check and then cash it so they can do the same for their crew.

Sent from my C771 using Tapatalk 2

Knowingly writing a bad check is a crime and is punishable by at least treble damages. In other words, three times the amount.

If they're a non-profit they most likely need the check to prove the payment went to you and not to benefit a member.

IRS: "So what's all these payments to coach Smith?"

501( c)(3): "Reimbursement for fees he paid to the umpires."

IRS: "Prove it - or lose your exemption."

Can anyone honestly say they know a true non-profit ball club that plays in games that pay umpires?
