That is a really tough call.  i'm with Maven on the "expected" call.  R3 was also running all over the place.  That's why we've got umpires, right?

Yes and why wouldn't they?  It was pretty clear cut to me.

^ pretty clear cut?!? Where it's a run down and R3 was all over the place, what contact, if any, was slight and had nothing to do with the outcome of the play. I don't think the fielder could have done a better job avoiding contact.

 

IMO it should have been a no call, maybe that is why I am not making 6-figures.

If the runner has to go around, that's OBS.

 

If the runner has to alter his pace, that's OBS.

 

If the runner has to change his balance to avoid, that's OBS.

 

Your standard might be a bit too high.

That has nothing to do with the call or the rule.

Thank you both for the clairity. So the OBS is pretty matter of fact. I guess those are the rules I struggle the most with when it comes down to interp or application.

You and me both. It's only matter of fact if you've seen it before.

 

Part of what's great about this site is the variety of plays that come up: we can talk about them and learn the correct interp of the rule, then we'll be ready when we see it on the field.

 

Now, explaining it to coach in 5 words or fewer is another challenge...

You might get the argument that the runner was already going "around".  He made a pretty big oblong on the reverse from third to home back to third. 

 

I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have called INT, given where the runner was going.  I'd most likely have been wrong. 

 

I understand that the runner can make his own basepath, but if you trace his route on this particular play, you'd see a drunk staggering home from the corner tavern.  Not to mention the fact he got himself caught in a rundown in the first place.....

Granted, R3 was running in "ovals", but watch F5. He throws and pretty much stays where he is and doesn't really peel off the runner's path as he should. I think OBS is the correct call.

And then you get the follow up "well I'll tell my runners just to run out of the way to contact the fielders"

 

followed by "that's a different rule and I'll call that when it happens."
