When the Manager is a Board Member in LL

My ejection report from last night with names removed. (Me at dish)

 

Manager was ejected in the game tonight. Rangers versus Tigers.
Manager was coaching 1st base with his team on offense.
Manager and 3rd base coach both rushed toward home plate after Plate Umpire (PU) called an out at home plate.
PU gave 3rd base coach a stop sign and told him to go back to third base coaches box, turned to manager and asked manager if he wanted a time out, since ball was in play.
Manager said yes, and asked for time. He was 20 feet down from Coaching box when he asked.
Manager felt it necessary to get on top of home plate and publicly display his read of the call. Straddling the home plate and flailing his arms.
I told him I saw it as an out and to return to the coaches box. 3rd base coach verbally instructed Manager to ask Base Umpire what he saw as I was walking back to plate. Manager then yelled to BU for an appeal, Manager was thrown out at that time.

Manager did not leave immediately. Manager demanded a warning.
Manager was still on the premises at the end of the inning sitting on his car, I pointed for him to leave the premises after the inning. As he is a board member, he was back at the snack bar after the game, and attended the General Meeting.

Agreed!  In hindsite, in my report, it does look like I was mentioning it as part of the EJ. Could have left that out.

If he left the field and went to his car in the parking lot, that is good enough.

As a Board Member he did have a meeting to attend.

Even if he wasn't a Board Member, he may have had to wait for kids playing in the game which he was transporting.

Once the game is over there are plenty of reasons he may have to come back as long as one of them is not to confront you.

FYI, the parking lot he was sitting in is above right field about 250 feet away. I considered that present at the game.

Purely visable from 3rd base dugout, which his team was occupying.

 

I was at the board meeting to, and when asked for my report, I said "All things are going well, we have not missed any assignments."

When the league president asked me what happened, I said it will all be in my report. Keep it professional, nothing personal. But everyone knew via texting that was flying around.

In our Little League, when you are wearing your "Coaches Hat", you are not a board member.  Literally!  Board members are not allowed to wear their BOD shirts/hats while coaching.

I don't care if he's the president of the LL and an assistant coach with the local Minor league affiliate of a AAA team somewhere.  When he's on the LL field as a coach, he's a COACH.  Good EJ.  If he has a meeting after that game, well, then, at least they have something to talk about now, don't they?

As someone who plays all 3 roles (umpire, manager, and board member), I don't think that's fair.  You wear an umpire's uniform so that people will understand your authority and responsiblity in the situation.  It's the same thing for the BOD.

Arrogant? Absolutely not!!

It's an identification thing. The board is always notifying the parents that if they have a question/comment/concern etc. to find a BOD member at the fields and talk to them in person.

It also shows that the board is present at all functions at the fields and are real people and approachable as such.

Our league board doesn't wear shirts, but that didn't stop me from warning our league president (who is also a 10U coach) the other night.  He understood he was on the verge of an EJ and stopped his argument immediately.

 

As said in another post, on the field he is a coach.  I treated him like any other coach in that situation and all was good.  We spoke the next day, he apologized for his behavior (which was not EJ worthy but was leading up to that) and actually thanked me for keeping him in the game.

On EJ, I was taught that it means out of SIGHT and out of SOUND.  I do not want to hear you or see you.  If they sit in the parking lot, no issue.  Parking lot behind the fence, I may have a problem.

If the facility has a parking lot they can sit in and see the game, so what.

They have been ejected.

If you are focusing on that coach or manager sitting on their car or what ever, your attention is not where it belongs and should be, which is on the field.

No idea.  I typed in a comment, clicked 'post' and all hell broke loose.  I even tried to edit the post to no avail.  Oh well.

In LL terminology, what does, must not be present at the "game site" mean. For me it would be any area-(including the parking lot) that the LL owned but that is why I am asking Rich who knows LL rules, philosophies and exactly what every word means.

 

I would assume (or maybe not) each League may allow a certain area to go to on the owned property as talked and agreed upon at the League meeting.

 

Maybe DTM could have more specifics included in his presentation to the board as the UIC of this League for next year. Just try and make it a more black and white issue for everyone involved during the game. Once the game is over, if he is allowed back for his BOD duties as per LL rule, then of course he should be allowed.

 

How are the words to this to be interpreted Rich and how do you handle it at your complex.

The league President sent an e mail to the Manager and notified him that he was ejected, it is unforgivable, and that he was suspended from his following game, which was last night at 8. (Fri, 5/17)

It also stated that local league rules state that 2 ejections in any year call for immediate dismissal from the league. I was not scheduled to work his game, but was told he was sitting in a neighbors yard across the street from the left field fence, across a street. So maybe 300 feet away from the dish.

 

That being said. I had 2 games today, the ejected manager/board member was there. I walked straight up to him, shook his hand and said, "You and I OK?" He said yes, and I said thanks and continued to the field I was assigned.
