Great backup by the HPU since the 1BU had the ball but did not have to go far from the bag making them closer than normal, but still the PU having the play in front of him versus the 1BU having to turn with the throw and possibly being straight lined without the maneuverability the PU could use if needed.

 

But, what Horse manure baseball from a guy making 14 million who cannot even catch the ball and a 24 million batter who cannot even run the ball out and be standing on 2nd like you are taught in LL. And then to get caught off the bag and make an out. Worse than any umpire mistakes so far including the home run and a rule. 3 errors on 1 play, with the missed catch, dogging the play and then getting caught off the bag. And this is pro ball. Are these guys getting sent down. Are they giving the fans their money back. Worse than Little League on this play. Do we need robot players that can catch and run and hustle. When are they going to hold these guys accountable??????

Its not really backup by the PU its SOP.  On a fly ball with no one on a BU goes out.  If U1 goes out, PU has the plays at first.

Exactly: it's called a rotation. What's unusual is U1 thinking he had any coverage on the throw-back to 1B. He's out...

That was a great play by the umpires, and you hear nothing from the broadcaster. They don't get on the players for looking like a circus act, and they don't commend the PU for making a nice play. But every time the umpire misses a close call, these announcers go on and on about how terrrible they are. Since I started umpiring I discover almost every day how unknowledgable some of these broadcasters are.

Why should the announcers commend an umpire for making the correct call on this play?  It was a simple rotation play and the PU did his job on what appeared to be a routine out.
