Yeah I saw that and he talking heads butchered it. I am hoping the umpires were confused because he thought he was being tagged out for making a move to second, not for missing first. Not touching first is a no brainer that they should never have to question.

That was my thought as well. The PU thought the BR got the base and the out was on going to second.

I think that was definitly the case.

Yes.

Cool, I got pretty well taken to task on a call at third by some folks here for making virtually the same call with the same mechanics on a play at third last season. In fact some here claimed that they'd "never heard of a no tag mechanic". Good to know I got it right. Thanks.

Close call in the DET-NYY game goes against New York... After the break in super slow mo, you can see Drake missed it by an eyelash... TBS announcer goes, "Very close, but in that situation, tie goes to the runner."

I would have given the "safe, no tag" mechanic only after BR passed first, acquiring it. Given a proper appeal, then the out call. On calls at other bases, 2nd, 3rd, or a play back into 1st, when there is a missed tag near the base and a subsequent "over slide" resulting in another tag attempt, I would give no such signal until the play fully develops and the runner is either safe or out.

Since runners are allowed to over run 1st base, different mechanics are used especially when the runner misses the base.

The only time I give the "safe, no tag" mechanic in situations other than the op is when a tag attempt is made away from the vicinity of a base where both the runner and the defense needs the information on the given play.
