Jeff-can you post the video from the bottom of the first inning?

Bases empty with 2 outs. Jones grounds to F6 in the hole and F6 makes an off target throw. U1 (Baker) calls Jones out. The PU (Barry) who was trailing the play, immediately signals the pulled foot and puts Jones at first. I found it interesting as there was no conversation or request for help that the cameras picked up. They got it right in the end.

Although this is right from the standpoint that the call was right ....but I see Scott Barry calling time, and changing the call without getting requested for help .... is this ok?

I love the announcers ......."good hustle ....I've never seen a home plate umpire do that ...maybe in little league but not up here ..." LOL

No I don't think it's correct. You are never to overturn a call without being asked. Even when you ARE asked, it's still your partner's call, he just asked for input. Rule plainly states this is not to be done, and I bet HP got his ass reamed for it. I would blast someone for grandstanding me like that, correct or not.

PU should not have done that. He might as well be calling 1B himself. I understand it was a gross miss but he is not there to overrule other umpires no matter what he thinks of the call. He is there to help when asked but not take it upon himself to make the call himself.

9.02 (c ) If a decision is appealed, the umpire making the decision may ask another umpire

for information before making a final decision. No umpire shall criticize, seek to

reverse or interfere with another umpire’s decision unless asked to do so by the

They dont show the umpires so maybe U1 pointed at PU right after the play or vebally asked him. At least I hope thats what happened.

No read step by U1. Good chance he didn't watch the release of the throw to judge its quality. Looks like he dropped anchor and made no adjustments.

agreed, but shouldn't HP have it drilled in his head NOT to act w/o proper granted appeal? PBUCUM clearly states BU should immediately go to HP BEFORE the sh*tstorm. Says nothing about HP jumping in unannounced and taking it away.

Think about this for a sec... at that Level the MLB level, they aren't stepping on toes.. and with all the HDTV's everywhere at every base, the most important thing is to get the right, and they did, with no arguments. Maybe after the Bill Weilke Play in Colorado MLB has talked to the Umpires and told them to fix it right away.. we don't know.. but those guys at that level working everyday ( even though Baker is a Fill-in) don't step on toes.. it doesn't happen. That stuff happens with us amateur Umpires who barely work with the same guys day in and day out.

With the "get it right" mantra, could this be the result of some non-public internal directive given to the MLB umpires? Kind of like "if you clearly see something different that allows you to 'get the call right' don't wait to be asked." I can't see any other reason why PU looks like he immediately called time and inserted himself into the call. If it is, I don't like it.

I agree they're living the life and I'm in the cheap seats, but I would drop verbal kung-fu on a partner that hijacked my call. Of course, we don't operate under ESPN microscopes and all the scrutiny, but still.......

Later in the game the announcers stated that MLB Umpire SpecIal Assistant Bruce Froemming was at the game and he stated that the the call by the PU was the greatest display of instinctive umpiring that he had ever seen.

We now have a new term for jumping your partners claim "instinctive umpiring".
