Saw this last night on Quick Pitch. First thing I thought I had; "that ball had more English on it than an entire collection of Webster's Dictionaries!"

I was doing an adult league game a few weeks ago where a ball hit foul that far and bounced fair and was thrown to first for the 3rd out. R3 asked me on his way back to the dugout if I had to go to Umpire school to call these games because it was clearly a foul ball when it hit foul "ITS BASIC BASEBALL"

I hope one of his teammates shows him this video.

It takes everything I have in these types of situations to keep myself from simply saying "You're an idiot" to players and coaches when they have no idea what they're talking about.

Well the first thing I noticed was the plate guy following the play on both ends. The initial Fair Foul call and he got back to the plate to have the run score.

Last night I was doing a good adult wooden bat game. The batter foul tipped the ball, which I had the catcher catching clean. He turned to me and said it was a foul tip. I said that's correct. He weakly pointed at the the R1 that took second. The dugout yells that it was a foul tip. I repeated to them that they were correct. Then the catcher says it skipped to him. I told him I didn't have that but I asked my partner. He said he caught it clean. I wouldn't normally ask but it was my partner's first game at that level so I thought he might be nervous. Catcher knew the rule, the dugout did not.

I think he did with his right as he was turning because he had a runner scoring and he has to see that too.

I laughed because the home plate umpire went back to 3b extended and was intently watching the runner come home and score and the fielder was clueless and not even in the picture as the runner crosses home with the umpire staring at the plate.

Every guy/gal who wants to immediatly scream foul ball should watch this. Once you kill it, it is dead dead dead.

As far as signalling with the wrong hand, this guy was probably so shocked he did well to get as much covered as he did.

I think the same thing. It will at some point. It just takes longer for some.

I think the signal was appropriate since he has other responsibilities behind him. This is a very good example of situation/runner awareness.

I work with a guy (I know we all do) who calls "FOUL BALL!!!" as soon as the ball hits foul territory. PRAYING that this happens to him, but alas, it never does.

I had this same play (with no runners on) happen in the championship game of an AAU tournament last weekend. Everyone did their job and BR was out at first. Not a peep from any player, coach or fan. I was shocked.

About 3 seasons ago during a HS Saturday Tourney I had to take "The Walk of Shame!" up the third base line after yelling "FOUL!" on a ball that bounded twice in foul territory up the 1B line before spinning back and hitting 1B itself on the third hop and bouncing out of play (over the fence) with runners on 2nd and 3rd.

 

Going up the 3B line I felt like a cheap date walking home on a Sunday morning with bed-head, mismatching socks, the wrong pants, backwards shirt, one shoe, and generally feeling like I had been run around the block and put-away-wet!

 

Thank God the team at bat was up by double digits...

After the game, stripping gear off on the tail-gate of my van, my partner (whom I work with a lot during the seasons) asked me

 

"So... How long was that walk up the 3rd base line?"

I replied "Very, very, very Long!."

 

Never again!!!! I dont care it the we have to call a 2 hour delay waiting for me... I will not jump a bounding ball up the foul line ever again.
