We will have to see when the umpire gets his day in court (because I wasn't there, I will go with what our legal system is based on, that the accused is innocent until proven guilty) but if it is true, a sad day for the profession.

The article says the Umpire said it was self-defense. If it was then it might be justifiable. Only Maybe. HTBT.

Article with more details, and names the accused and the alleged victim.

Since both umpire and coach have complete opposite versions of the event (gee, there is a surprise), hopefully the coppers found some "uninvolved" and neutral witnesses who can shed some light on what really happened. Obviously, one of the two is lying...the hard part being trying to figure out which one it is.

From the articles, sounds like this happened on the field during the game. Even if he was bumped (which from the articles is unclear) no excuses for what the stories describe happened. Sounds like the umpire went in with a preconceived notion he would have to defend himself and let it get the better of him.

Here's my $0.02 without any first hand knowledge.

  1. the ump didn't want to work in that league and shouldn't have.
  2. The "victim" said ... "I’ve seen bumping between guys, but never anything like this." implying there has been bumping at 10 y/o games. Really if that is the case they have really big problems there"
  3. The league president only is making comments defending the coach, nothing in favor of the umpire. I'd hope given the circumstances he would be very general in his statements not leaning either way.
  4. The article is very one sided.

I want to see how this plays out in court.

We know Umpires don't lie!

Could care less where this incident happened.

Delnegro, through his attorney, Jordan Rikards, issued the following written statement: “Mr. Delnegro was initially reluctant to umpire in Piscataway, having been previously warned about the unusually volatile nature of certain coaches and fans in that township.“In fact, Mr. Delnegro’s father is also a little league umpire, and was greatly concerned for his son’s safety and well-being in Piscataway. Their concerns proved to be well-founded.

Why are we as umpires even contracting with a League such as this, that has this reputation. Let them use their own coaches as umpires. No umpire group or association should put umpires on the field with a league or area that has this kind of reputation until it is totally cleared up forever. Let them eat beans and like it.

Just my 2 cents and now I am butting out.

Glad to see the charged him with a Felony.

Probably will be reduced as part of a Plea Bargin.

This was in our local paper. Alabama class c felony carries 2-20 years and up to $5000 fine. Took him 2 days to raise the $2000 bail. Can you say "Douchebag" boys and girls? BTW... The Umpire was a 19 year old kid in his 1st year and this jackass sucker punched him.

More fun from Jersey! If you buy a house next to a baseball field, well...

N.J. man charged with assault for attacking player sent to retrieve foul ball

In one of the most surreal twists to a high school baseball game in recent memory, a high school senior who went onto private property neighboring his school's baseball field to retrieve a foul ball was assaulted by the man who lived in the adjoining house.

In what could have doubled as an outtake from the 1993 movie "The Sandlot," an unspecified senior baseball player for Scotch Plains (N.J.) Union Catholic High was sent to bring back a foul ball which landed beyond the outfield fence during his team's senior day game against Plainfield (N.J.) High. Yet, as soon as he neared the ball, the player was attacked by the man who lived at the house, 44-year-old Michael Bennett.

According to MyCentralJersey.com, Bennett grabbed the Union Catholic player by the neck and wrist, then, "grabbed the ball and told him to get off his property."

Union Catholic baseball coach Jim Reagan JR. quickly came to his player's defense, screaming for Bennett to let the player go. Bennett complied. But MyCentralJersey reported that the player was left with visible scratches. Scotch Plains police were quickly called to the scene, and Bennett was arrested, charged with assault and later released from police custody.

"I recall yelling 'Sir, stop it! Get your hands off of him!'" Reagan told MyCentralJersey. "I had to run through the Plainfield dugout to get to the scene.

"He [the player retrieving the foul ball] definitely showed restraint. I think he was probably more shocked than anyone. And I want to commend Scott [Gleichenhaus, the Plainfield varsity coach] and his team and coaches, because they were excellent in this situation as well. They offered their full support."

While no additional news about future court proceedings involving Bennett were made available, Reagan said that he had never encountered any incidents remotely like the one that occurred in the Plainfield game in more than a decade at the school.

"No doubt about it: It was the most surreal experience I've had in 11 years as a baseball coach," Union Catholic assistant principal and varsity baseball coach Jim Reagan JR. said Monday. "But the kid is fine. I think other than being shocked and surprised at what occurred, he's OK."

Man, I'm not going to joisey! Those yankees are worse than the Bama rednecks! At least down here "we all got guns" so there's mutual deference. I carry mine more often than not. Never needed it (yet, knock on wood), but better to have it and NOT need it than to need it and NOT have it.

You carry your gun on the field!! I never thought of that, I bet you never get any arguments on close plays.

I'm not going into somebody's backyard or frontyard in Plainfield unless I'm invited! :big_no

I've seen this a lot...Not physical violence, but people who live on neighboring lots next to ball fields getting PO'ed. It's insane...The ball field has been there before you moved in...Wife says "Oh look dear, there's a baseball field just beyond our backyard fence"...Husband replies 'Don't worry honey, I'll make sure there's no ball playing going on while we're here" I don't get it. I know one field that whenever there's a game they let the dogs out to bark for two hours, or make sure it's time mow the lawn, or cut some firewood with the chainsaw. :shakehead:

Maybe it IS a Jersey thing
