Jeff

I am aware of this.

I am advocating something totally new inside and out.

There is a kind of CP use by some of our armed forces that may have had Zorbium® inside.

I have worn one and we used to say you could get hit by an RPG and survive.

It was very bulky BUT did offer incredible protection and good mobility.

It came out of DEVGRU in 2009 and all were custom made per person.

Not sure who made them.

I will check on this and let you know.

It is now time for some of you to start raking me over the coals for even considering this.

No reason for us to rake you over the coals, you seem to be doing it already :)

If TW came out with a completely new CP I am confident that there would be a lot of interest in it (depending of course on how affordable they could make it)

From past experience I've seen that umpires are willing to shell out premium dollars for premium products, but hell hath no fury like a sub-par product with a premium price.

Exactly. MINO

I have a poke back into my old team for info on the MIL-SPEC " CP"

We will see.

I would think Team Wendy would want to expand their offerings as the DOD is cutting back.

Maybe a partnership with Wilson or someone.

Posted

Problem with a partnership is that Wilson (as an example) already gets a premium price because of the brand recognition.  Adding TW padding and then having Wilson as the manufacturer of record will add extra cost/margin.  I think that TW should also develop the shell (or source and brand it on their own), that way they can control costs and all aspects of the design.  People will buy the CP because of the TW name, not necessarily because of the Wilson name in this case.

I think the CP would need to be at or below the $200 MSRP level to be deemed premium yet still obtainable/affordable.  Can't see WIlson being able to offer this premium upgrade at that price point.

I doubt Wilson would do that, as it would be an admission that their gear isn't the best.

It would be cool if a middle man, like Ump Attire, could get just the Wilson plastic, then mate it with TW and Delta Flex.

My off season project is to overlay my Platinum with carbon fiber, then upgrade as above. If All Star won't do the carbon fiber chest protector, I'll make my own.

BTW, what ever became of that All Star c/p? It never really took off, did it? It was cool, just not that revolutionary. At least not enough to pry guys out of their Platinum/Gold.

I concur, Wilson would never do that for Kyle's reasoning.

The Ump-Attire idea however, is a decent idea (sans the Wilson plastic)

Carbon Fiber is too expensive for All-Star to justify a business case (assumption) .... and honestly, as much as I like Brad and All-Star, I think their bread and butter is catcher's stuff and that's going to remain their focus, ...not umpire equipment.   However, that said, I could be wrong as the umpire gear niche makes perfect sense for a company like All-Star.  We'll see what's on the horizon for next year.

The military CP I was refering to is a custom job per person.

Carbon fiber-kevlar.

Built by Safeguard Armor on a costplus contract that never took off.

$9k per unit.

Oh.  In that case - 2 for me, please.

Two on the way. Size crabby.

It would be good if they would take the harness and add say 6' to it for umpires so you all wouldn't need to put your own together.  That shouldn't be too hard for them I wouldn't think, but it does create extra SKUs that they'd have to keep track of.

I wore my TW pads this evening in warm weather and I was amazed at how soft and flexible they were. I never remember them being like that

Got whacked in the face by a foul ball on tuesday during a 9 inning varsity game. Knocked my mask clean off. Got a very minor concussion but I am positive that the TW pads helped make it minor rather then major.

Will be using my TWP for the first time tonight,  Looking forward to it.

May you get struck with a Foul-Tip to test the pads!  :fuel:

Don't suck, post a pic in the mask porn thread.

Ok.  TW pads are really good.  Reduced the weight of my mask and I know I'm getting better protection.  They're not quite as comfortable as the doeskin, tho.  I can feel the stubble catching.  I'm sure that as I use them they will wear a bit.  I'm glad I bought them.  I'm not as glad as others...-

Edited to add - has anyone noticed that your calls are muffled?

Yes, I've noticed some muffling of my voice. Good thing I'm loud to begin with!

Took my first mask shot with the team Wendy's pads.  16U, big kid throwing mid 70s.  Foul just off-center left.  Drew big reaction from spectators players and coaches.

Very impressed.  With the original pads, I would have been seeing stars for sure.

My calls are still plenty loud, but my chatter to the catcher and batter are noticeably reduced. I won't say muffled, per-say, because they can still distinguish what I say, but even I noticed it's like someone turned down the volume knob on my vocal cords. I'm starting to realize that it may even be a benefit, considering there is information that I relay to the catcher and batter purposely, and in the past, wasn't too keen on everyone in the dugouts hearing it. When I wear my other mask (Diamond DFM-iX3 w/ MacGregor doeskins), my voice projects really well.

I was hesitant to get the Team Wendy's when I read that it's a microfiber surface, and not leather. I typically sport the "playoffs stubble beard" for weeknight games, and then shave it off for church Sunday morning (and voila, it's back by Monday afternoon), mostly because leather pads on a cleanly-shaven face will cause a break-out. But, other microfiber pads will either snag my stubble, or be retainers of dust and bacteria (which cause and fuel the breakouts), and are more difficult to keep clean day-to-day. I actually keep a bin of Anti-germ / anti-microbial wipes in my bag to wipe down my masks before and after games. The Team Wendy pads do not snag my beard stubble whatsoever.

My MacGregor doeskins have been holding up well, but I'm awfully tempted to get another set of Team Wendy pads to put on the black wireframe mask. They would be tans again, unless Team Wendy has inspiration to make alternate colors (silver/grey! So make it so!... or perhaps a Charcoal to match our pants?) -- I'm not a fan of black-on-black.

I did at least try...

Team Wendy-

Your UMPs pads are brain-savers! This is a serious inquiry – any chance you would do (an) additional color(s)? Silver springs immediately to mind, or perhaps charcoal, navy or red?

This mail is sent via contact form on Team Wendy

Max

Thank you for the contacting Team Wendy. We do not have any plans on offering additional colors.

Glad to hear the Face mask has added additional comfort.

I asked about different colors from TW quite a few months ago with the same response .... (last Summer (late) is when I asked) ....

I too have noticed that my voice seems muffled with the TW pads ...nothing major, but  you can tell ......

(back R two lower molars).  Dentist set fillings.. jaw stopped hurting in 5 days. Went to WENDYS (tan), look great, feel great, Ate a ball dead centre, barely felt it. loved it. asked for seconds.  Thanks TW!!!
