Smitty poly wools are a nice option for those trying to save money. I put them next to a pair of hardwicks honigs/UA and they're good color wise. For those trying to save some cash they are a good option. Also the new USA alternatives for honigs are made by hardwicks as well.

I recently moved and joined a new association. I was ready to drop the big dollars on some poly wools. Instead they strongly recommend Gerry Davis and I will wear them too. I will save the Smittys just in case or for other non association games. When in Rome, get a toga.

They don't want you to look better than them. :)

I checked on the UA PWs. Theyre madie in USA and the waist isn't restrictive (my main complaint about Honigs PWs). Anyone have a side by side comparison of UA and Honigs PWs? Anyone? Bueller......Fitts... Fitts

I have both brands. They're the same pants except fro the expandable waist.

great! I'll go with the UAs when I need more PWs.

Poly wools are like those sexy model type women you meet in the bar.... Just when she's ready to go home with you, her fat ugly GDs style friend shows up to C-Block. :)

Don't settle for the fat ugly chick....

It's funny that everyone here hates GD pants but they seem to be the standard in a lot of places. I'm new to the HS association so I can't complain. All the guys I've talked to love the GD pants. I bought some but haven't received them yet. I've tried on my PWs and they felt like HEAVEN. I'm definitely gonna bring my PWs out just so the other guys can feel them and possibly make a recommendation that a change be made to the standard. I can't wait until January at pro school to break out my PWs and even this summer in semi-final and championship games! BTW I'm glad I joined and browsed this site before purchasing much needed pants.

Good luck. The cost is what makes it next-to-impossible for any organization to make them the "standard." With new umpires already spending over $500 for the bare essentials, asking them to spend an extra $30-40 for pants is a kick in the crotch (hopefully after they've purchased their cup).

When I started with my organization, we were told to buy charcoal grey, but were also told the standard was changed a year or two before, so some partners may still only have heather grey.

I agree. Most associations are not going to make polys the standard. We finally going to charcoal this year and also with the new $37 shirts.

Well for what it's worth I've recommended them to a few of my favorite partners who I know I can get assigned with in summer ball.

Sorry to be blunt, and stereotype here, but most umpire's only taste is in their mouth. GD pants are probably the quality of their "Sunday best(only)", Richardo Montalban signature suit from Pennys, so they just don't know, nor care about a better quality product. And that's fine. If you feel good in them drawers, that's half the battle. I've got a couple pair of 'em at the bottom of my bag, just in case. They're a utilitarian piece of gear. Like a steel Wilson mask, with those square leather pads. They do the job.

Me, I love the feel of slipping on the newly dry cleaned Honig's plate pants, with a 3 1/2" hem for extra weight at the bottom. That smooth feel of the double knee sliding over my shinguards is like donning a pair of silk lined Italian slacks. I like a properly fit pant, even if the expander waist allows for an extra helping at the midnight buffet for some. I buy my pants 2" over my Levis size, for just such occasions (and tucking in two shirts).

When it comes down to it, I can't whine too much, as we're all stuck wearing the same God awful shirts, that don't vary much by maker. Maybe someday the MLB umpires will get Adidas to supply them, and we'll all be sporting Climacool/Climawarm jerseys, instead of the woven polyester garbage we're stuck with. Ah, I can always dream, can't I?

I use GD and have cringed at buying Poly Wools for one reason: cleaning. I've heard conflicting stories on how to clean them, from "do nothing but dry clean" to "it's fine to run it through your regular laundry load." I know the answer is somewhere in the middle.

I simply don't have $80 to plunk on a pair of pants that I might ruin by trying to clean them.

Ahem..... I own both Honig's PWs and GDs. When in Rome..... Most guys won't spend $80 on pants to call travel/rec/hs ball. Next, you guys will be razzing me for not wearing force 3 socks :P

when in Rome is the key. I dry clean my PW's approx three times per season. It works for me.
