Nope. But I do have quite the array of warm gear. Fortunately the leagues here that play this early in the season have rules that they don't play if the Feels-like temp is below the freezing mark.

T-minus 8 days to my first game. In Kansas.

That's where "preventative umpiring" comes into play. If you can tell they're going to windup, but they meet the technical definition of the set - ask them. Then you can let everybody know and nobody gets upset.

I can get an ad-free experience with web browser extensions. I didn't do it for that. I did it because of the value I get from the site. And I hope others follow suit.

Going from the V1 to the V2 was huge. The V2 has internal plates. The difference in V2 to V3 seems to be pretty minimal. I use the V2 as my "daily driver". Note that if you go to the V2 (or V3), you need to wear it tight against your chest - otherwise you get a "slap" that can feel substantial.

Glad to have you with us! What brings you here? Where are you from?

I could get with that if fields were always marked well. The field I ran the box on didn't have any yard markers other than the stripes every 5 yards. And I've seen "yard lines" that varied at least 2 ft from a straight line. One other question (again, legitimately asking) - is there any reason why "offensive offsides" shouldn't be blown dead immediately like a false start, rather than played out? If that was the case here, I'm pretty sure the situation would have been "that sucks...moving on" rather than the frustration we saw.

I've watched this in slo-mo, and I disagree (yes, even as a Chiefs fan, but even more as a proponent of fairness). Miller tried to time the snap and was off by a tiny bit. He does start moving before the snap, but doesn't actually move into the neutral zone (except maybe his hand - is that legal? I dunno) until after the ball is snapped.

Speaking as a Chiefs fan, even through the Matt Cassel years (shudder). I have exactly zero NFL experience aside from sitting in the stands a few times and watching on TV. I only played one year of football in Jr. High. However, I did run "the box" (aka the down marker) for the school where my wife taught for several years, so take this for what that's worth. When running the box, frequently (not every play, but maybe one every 3 downs on average), a player would look at the sideline and say "I'm up" or "I'm back" and the official would either tell him he's good or would say "you're too close", or "you need to move up/back", or something similar. A few times a player would be too close, the official would tell him, and then the player would not move. The official would repeat it a few times, loud enough the player could hear and most of the time they would then move. If they didn't the flag would come out, and I've heard the official tell the coach "I warned him 3 times" (or something similar). I don't know, maybe NFL stadiums are loud enough such communication isn't possible (especially in Arrowhead), but it certainly seems reasonable to me. FWIW, Mahomes is walking back his behavior. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/chiefs/2023/12/12/patrick-mahomes-apologizes-kadarius-toney-penalty-chiefs-josh-allen/71890965007/ - I think it was less about that actual penalty and more about the frustration of this being the second game in a row where a last-minute call was big and the Chiefs lost both.

https://www.barcodelookup.com/045888460188 I'm a fan of the Sarasa gel pens. I've never had a problem in the wet. High school coaches, being teachers, will bring out their lineups in black, blue, green, red, purple, or whatever. Oh yeah, well I have BROWN

Assuming he's also playing in the field, that is an "unreported substitute" not an illegal substitute. The penalty for an unreported substitute is that you put him in the right spot. Done. (And note that the player originally on the lineup has been subbed out, so may not be eligible to play, depending on the ruleset.) Now, different scenario... If he's on the the submitted lineup but in the wrong order, and he's been batting in the wrong order all game, he's still in the wrong order on his 3rd time up and subject to those penalties.

Start more shallow than you think you should. It gives a great view of the pickoff. @JonnyCat nailed the footwork part I'm old and fat, and even when I was young, I was slow. You can get those steps back to get a good view of the play at 2nd. In the last year I had only one time where I didn't feel like I was in a good position. R1 made no noise running and no fielders yelled "going!" or made any other indication that R1 was stealing. The catcher came up gunning and I thought "gee he's being awfully aggressive getting the ball back to the pitcher... Aw crap." And even then I was able to get a look at the play, just not from as optimal of a viewpoint as I would have liked.

I'd be surprised if @JimKirk hadn't already done the cost/benefit analysis on this. Considering they don't carry it, I'm guessing the answer is "not as much of a killing as you're suggesting"

Those are for coaches that like to argue too much.

As a Chiefs fan (for 30+ years, I ain't no bandwagon fan), I loved this one: He gives the peace sign to a guy that's still ahead of him. And proceeds to score, untouched.

OK, I need to put in a partial retraction... AllAccess is a site and an app. The site is useless on a mobile device. The app makes it at least usable. And from the app, I could, indeed copy-and-paste. Is it now the greatest thing ever? Far from it. Is it at least functional? Yes

Most unique / strangest field you’ve ever worked?
kylehutson replied to The Man in Blue's topic in War Stories
I've not worked on odd colored fields, but have a couple that are interesting to be on... Field 1: 235' to the right field pole. Huge (40'?) fence there. Lights poles are inside the fence. Foul balls onto the busy(-ish ... it's Kansas) highway are the norm. Field 2: Also 235' to the right field pole, but this one is only 277' to dead center. A legion team plays there, and they have fun with it... when a home run is hit, I routinely hear "That was a good 278!" And you can't tell from the overhead shot, but it slopes down from the plate toward center field as well. The elevation at the center field fence is probably 5' lower than the plate. -
I do the same. Grass shoes are all leather (well, as much as I could find for the plate) for easy cleaning. Turf shoes are difficult to clean, but I don't care because I rarely have to do anything except throw them back in the bag.
-
He, naturally, lobbied for it. But considering how soon he dropped it, I'm sure he knew and was just was hoping I didn't.
-
I must be above average, I've had it multiple times, including one hit off the left field fence.

RadarNow for general usage, including alerts when my current location goes into an NWS-indicated alert (watches and warnings), which also makes it great for driving in potentially nasty weather. RadarScope (paid only) for the look that you can get from TV stations. If you live in the tornado belt, everybody is an amateur meteorologist, and we like seeing wind sheer, etc. Daily basis forecasts, Google's built-in status/front-page screen When weather is coming and I want to know how long it will be before it gets here, I open AccuWeather If I'm looking at lightning in particular, "Lightning Alarm"

The number you give is 1 in (counting) a billion. I think it's probably closer to 95% (1 in 20) to 98% (1 in 50)
