I agree wholeheartedly with this. But... AllAccess ain't it. I have it for volleyball rules and it sucks. It's not an app, it's a website that uses what looks like(?) an embedded PDF viewer. Except the PDF viewer they use doesn't work on my phone screen because my phone screen is too small (note: my phone is not small). The DRM they use prevents me from copying to the clipboard. Just yesterday, I was trying to forward a rule reference and had to re-type it, despite being able to see it on my screen. Searching - yes, it works for that, as long as you're on a desktop computer Mobile - nope Reading - It's slow and clunky. Possible, yes. Convenient, no. An improvement over the "NFHS Rules" app - not even close. I hope it gets better.

Pfft. I've had "floaters" since elementary school. And yes, they're getting worse, but still not something I think about on a regular basis.

Our stories are eerily similar. I'm 52 and in May 2018 I picked up my first pair of readers (easy to remember as it was my youngest child's graduation). After trying them for a bit, my eyes said "oh, I don't *have* to work this hard? Good, I won't then." I now carry these in my pocket (if not on my face) at all times.

Late to the posting party... Here game fees are determined by the school (and in many schools, the league dictates the rates). In the last two years, it's been in the $70-$75/game range for HS varsity, $60-70 for JV. No mileage. Comparing sports is useful. I also work volleyball, largely for the same schools. On a weeknight, I will usually make a little less (typically $35-$40/game for 3 games), but Games start later, so I don't have to take as much time off of work I work fewer total hours (usually 3 as compared to 4-1/2) Sportsmanship is frankly not an issue (I've gone entire seasons without issuing as much as a yellow card, and I've never issued a disqualification) No rainouts/weather issues or last-minute schedule/venue changes I can work a full day of tournaments on the weekend and not feel completely worthless by the time I'm done (and will make more money when I do)

I had a high school game this spring where I got to the field and then realized my plate pants were hanging safely by the washer at home. So I put my F3's on under my tailored(!) base pants. They were tight around the legs, to be sure, but not unusably so. Enough that I bet my partner (who I was talking to as I realized my mistake) and I were the only two people who even knew.
-
1) I still get "plate pants", but I also get them tailored. 2) I prefer pleated, myself. But I also don't have a particularly skinny/athletic build. Flat fronts can look really good on somebody that is built that way.

Love 'em or Hate 'em ... new LL shirts
kylehutson replied to The Man in Blue's topic in Umpire Equipment
Where I am, during the regular season nobody cares. Post-season, they want at least a patch on the shirt OR the hat. They'd like both, but would settle for just one. -

Mad Max Takes First Step (Ha!) at Cyborg Umpiring

So not just limited to the skull??? Glad things went well (at least surgery-wise) and that you're on the road to recovery. -
I also throw my lineups away. I've already seen things here that I'm going to steal, but I will add that I like my own system for conferences. I write DC i.o (base positions) score who count DC = defensive conference (or OC for offensive conference) i=inning o=outs base positions, I draw an upside-down V and then put dots for baserunners at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd the way TV shows them score in the format away-home (because most scoreboards but the HT last) who = HC for head coach, AC for assistant coach, F2 for catcher, etc. count = leave blank if it's 0-0, otherwise the count of the batter at the plate So if the score is 3-1 head coach takes a defensive conference in the bottom of the 4th with 1 out, runners at 1st and 3rd and a 3-0 count on the batter, my line would look like this: It's compact, easy to write, and when you put them in columns, it's easy to glance and see what conferences were taken and when. There can only be one time where that exact situation existed in the game.

I've always preferred this one:

Up to this point, we really could (almost) be talking about umpires and coaches, but after this, it falls off the rails. However there are a few choice quotes that could still be relevant... "Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses" and "Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I'm being repressed!"

Well, you didn't bother to find out, did you?

Typically during late March to early April, I start getting behind on posts here because I'm on the ball field so much and my silly boss thinks I need to put some time in there if he's going to pay me, too. I eventually work my way back. All that to say, I missed this for the past several months. Welcome to my fellow Kansan! Feel free to PM me if I can help you out.

Watermelon between games is also fantastic for keeping both the electrolytes and hydration up.

I may only qualify as an associate member. AFAIK, I haven't ever been called the world's worst umpire, but I did have a middle school volleyball player call me "F#cking blind"
-
It is (and has been) in my games. Usually followed by the pitcher saying "but I landed behind the rubber". I haven't ever had any push-back from a coach more than I do on any balk call. ("whattaya mean? He came set!")

Hehe. Around here, we'd call you "city folk"

R1 obvious steal situation. Why dont coaches.....
kylehutson replied to SleptTilNoonLOL's question in Ask the Umpire
Not if R1 did start to advance. If R1 did wait to "make sure the throw is to the plate", then yes. -
🙄 “This is the type of errant pedantry up with which I will not put.” --Attributed to Winston Churchill Yes, you're right. It's an "indicator", but did you have any question about what he was referring to? (Excuse me... "about the device to which he was referring?") If not, then who cares? If you're going to Pro School, you're absolutely right that it should be called nothing other than an indicator. I call it an ind-clicki-counter, just because I like watching people's heads explode who get up-tight about the silliest things.

Ejectable offenses: Personal Prolonged Profane Personal? No, they were arguing the calls, not you, directly Prolonged? They were getting there. As long as they didn't continue after the warning, that's probably good. Profane? Check - you can't swear at anybody (especially in high school) and expect to stay in the game. Only one quibble... "Shake it off" was right there, and you didn't jump on it???

I'll throw in another good (but paid) resource... https://ump-app.com/ It's an extensive umpire training site including both mechanics and rules, created by a D1 umpire and instructor at several camps I've been to.
