So far I have been lucky and have not been asked to punch any tickets by the coaches over the past few year but I am 100% on the 'they eject themselves' side of the coin. As others have mentioned in their replies I as well work with and manage a large group of diverse folks and as happens some of the time I have to have unpleasant conversations with them which gives you a pretty thick skin and an ability to handle adversity. The closest I have had to come this season to an EJ is walking over to the HC and reminding him that his AC at 3rd is loudly disagreeing with a call and that as we discussed at the plate meeting this is not going to occur across the diamond. I just asked him if he wanted to deal with the matter or if he wanted me to deal with it? He dealt with it and the 3rd BC was quiet and demur the remainder of the game. Of course this method worked in this situation but other hot heads? Most likely not so much.

Ever had a season end three weeks before it began?

Could be several reasons other than straight liability. I am paid typically direct by the schools. If under 18 in California I cannot legally enter into a contract which acting as an independent contractor basically requires. Sucks I know but you have heard this before... Don't rush to grow up too fast... It will all be behind you faster than you realize and then you will wonder where all the years went. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I'm just jealous that you can make that statement! My umpire room is typically the front of my vehicle. Also send some of that rain to So Cal please!

Foul ball. Ball was touched in foul territory.

Baseball: Buena head coach Harry Grose 'feels bad' about 52-3 win

Good news kids... you all get some practice working on your switch hitting today. Good luck. -
Wonder how Mom and Dad are going to enjoy dealing with paying the fines for their disrespectful and soon to be convicted dumpling? Maybe the coach of the team who is setting such a great example will help foot some of the bill...

Since I work all solo at the HS level.. Mine!

To penalize or not to penalize...that is the question.
Mudisfun replied to woodiemiller's question in Ask the Umpire
A bad throw that would have stayed on the field of play if the gate was closed! How many pitched balls into the inning did you as the plate umpire or field umpire have to check the field prior to putting the ball into play. Bottom line is weather or not the coaches complied with what they agreed to at the plate meeting it is the officials job to put their head on a swivel and take a quick glance around. Not to hard to call time, step out and tell the coach to close that gate. My feeling is that blame for the zoo play you are describing rests with the guy wearing the gear... Either eat it and award bases or don't but once the line ups are handed to me at the plate I have full responsibility for the field and its condition regardless of plate meeting discussions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk If you read the original situation, the gate in question is on the OUTFIELD SIDE of each dugout. Its the teams responsibility to keep gates shut, not the umpires. That is not a "zoo" play. A "zoo" play would be "On the 3rd Friday of the month which happened to be Friday the 13th, bases loaded, 2 outs, a full count on the batter and the team at bat is down 1 run. The pitcher pitches & the lights go off. Whats the ruling?" My original reply was call time and award bases. Coaches are rats and will do whatever they can to try and gain an advantage. Impose the proper penalty and then make sure the issue does not repeat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Some of this started to make sense... and since you were talking HS rule I knew it had to be a farce!

I think this is the best line I have read all day.

Bottom line is the defense messed up by making a bad throw to third. How is the ball going through the open gate any different than if it bounced over the fencing or found a hole under and went out of play? Yes the gates should have been closed but once that condition was allowed to exist the open fencing became part of the existing playing field and you must rule on the play accordingly. Time... you home. Play ball. -
how early in a game can i sub a player
Mudisfun replied to Coach Trevor's topic in Youth Recreation Ball
The 1st question is are you batting 9 or CBO? CBO you need to get 6 and 1 in the game which the 1 is a no brainer since regardless of defensive plays your player will get minimum at bats. The six can be anytime. Batting 9 then you have to make sure subs get 6 and 1 before you pull them and remember if a starter is out of the game and then renters as a sub for another starter then your original starter is now a sub and has to get minimum again since they no longer qualify as a starter but a sub. I recused myself from the school my nephew attends which happens to be where I graduated from. Once he is gone I will reopen that school... I can care less if the school I attended a thousand years ago wins or loses a game. I find it funny when a buddy of mine asks me if I went to or saw our old schools football game. The last time I went to my high schools football games I was a student there 20+ years ago. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Those little kids, though, just stand around dumbfounded, or are off trying to tie their shoes (again) or tuck their jersey in (again).)

I had an eval lat night and one comment from my evaluator was "man, it is so hard to sit on this side of the fence and just watch". Based on this I few your pain and excitement when many of us only can complain when there is a one or two day rain out. Go out and have fun!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Pretty much in all of Souther California that I am aware of JV/Frosh Soft and Freshman are solo unless calling some of the Private schools who will pay for 2 or 3 man. Don't want to work solo? Your not going to work HS then around here for the most part unless all you have on your schedule is Varsity or your only doing youth ball where the cost to the league is a hot dog and a coke or the teams pay. So Saturday night we had the first of 4 under the lights Challenger LL night games in California District 62. What a blast! This is a series of special games we play where the Challenger team plays a mishmash of players from one of the local leagues. We have a DJ with walk up music and all of the snack bar proceeds go to the Challenger division. Just awesome to see these kids and young adults out there just to play the game. We has several 'hidden ball' plays... somehow always the Challenger team that pulled that one off and a ton of fun for all. The crew all received special hats for participating as well as the traditional free hot dog and a coke. Only 2 more of these on my schedule for the season which to be honest are my favorite games to work all season.
