  1. I too call the "high" strike. I tell both catchers to help me out on the high strikes because I do call them so go ahead and grab those for a second and don't just pull them down right away. A strike is a strike. Just because it is at the upper part of the zone and because the majority of umpires refuse to call it a strike confuses the hell out of me. My guess is too much MLB watching. Look up the rulebook strike zone. It is HUGE. Use it to your advantage. I do hear some grumblings from the stands but that doesn't bother me. Pitchers like it, games go faster, and believe it or not coaches prefer strikes over balls. Just be consistent with it.
  2. Really wasn't that close but I've missed a few too lol. At least he tried getting an out
  3. Pay for 3 man or don't make a crappy pickoff throw. But, yes in 2 man it is the PU responsibility.
  4. At TUS, if we did not get an out on this play we would be getting an argument from Spagnardi or Gosney.
  5. Who the hell counts belt loops? I was just curious. Comes into effect when you want to wear dual ball bags.
  6. Question regarding belt loops on the Honigs Poly Wools...How many are there? And specifically how many are there in the back? Same with the Smitty Poly Wools, anyone know or have a pair?
  7. R1 with ground ball in infield PU rotates up to third and then retreats back to the plate if out is recorded at 2B. If R1 is safe at 2nd base PU has potential play coming into 3B. No runners on with a triple is where there is different ways. PBUC manual has BU taking the BR all the way, FED has PU taking BR at 3B and BU covering home.
  8. FED coverage on a triple is for old men. Sorry if I am ruffling feathers here but I am athletic enough to get my butt from A and be in a HOK set for a play at 3B. No reason for PU to leave home.
  9. Was just about to make a topic for this. Good call
  10. I keep a folder in my car with my pregame checklist. Some guys get theirs laminated. I used the TASO pre-game outline, customized it and took it to Staples and had it laminated. This year I also threw my old coaches clipboard with dry erase markers to go over things either pre or post game. Handy tool to have. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk You pregame that whole outline with your partner every game?
  11. Do you have a link for this mask?
  12. Head height helps in tracking with your eyes, especially with catcher set up inside. With that said I do occasionally find myself moving my head. Something I try to work on eliminating every time I'm on the stick.
  13. Gosney was a great instructor at TUS. Learned so much from that guy and am excited to see him work MLB games this year. That being said, looked like he was safe on replay but why the hell is Harper even arguing? It's a clown spring training game, Bryce.
  14. Glad to see the umpire in the 1st picture is in tip top physical shape....
  15. This technique was definitely NOT taught at TUS. There it's "BALL ONE" They did however teach us when responding to the manager or catcher where the pitch was the proper language is: up, down, in and out.
  16. Hemmed or no?
  17. They started evals yesterday. I believe somewhere around 30 are selected for MiLB jobs. Others will be sent to Coastal Plains League waiting for a call up. As for the high level college baseball, PBUC has nothing to do with college baseball. ok. I know PBUC has nothing to do with college. But just wondering if it will help some of the guys get there. Doesn't hurt but none will be jumping right into ACC or SEC ball. College baseball is a little more about who you know and networking from what I have been told. I'm sure some others on here have more knowledge about this particular subject than myself.

  19. My roommate from TUS and two guys in my crew made it to PBUC. wishing them all the luck next week and I think all 3 will end up with jobs. Two of them worked American Association and Northwoods League last year and the other is just a great umpire
  20. I was not selected for PBUC but had one hell of a time. Great experience, I'm 100x better umpire now and I would recommend TUS to anyone and everyone.
  21. The drilled us at TUS to always have shoulders square. Also for TUS, proper stance was heel/instep not heel/toe. Took a little adjustment for me.
  22. Are you going for a job or to improve as an umpire but not in Minor League Baseball? A job would be nice but if it does not workout it's not the end of the world.
  23. How is TUS going? Very good. Final week starts tomorrow, will be a big week for a lot of us. What is your ranking in the class, according to you. To be better each day. But in all seriousness it is tough to tell. There is 90 of us. Usually split up each day two fields(45 people) and have people going to cages too. Impossible to see everyone. Definitely can tell some guys "get it" and have great instinct where others are still struggling a bit. I will say everyone that I have seen has improved from day 1 leaps and bounds. Awesome experience.
