  1. My favorite is the almost screeching "WHAT?? NO WAY THAT WAS WAAYYY TOO HIGH/LOW/OUTSIDE/INSIDE/JUST A BAD CALL FOR NO GOOD REASON!" I had this one woman one time that all she would say after ever called strike was "ARE YOU BLIND???" that one never gets old lol
  2. My fiance has Tourettes. There a few things that I have learned that are irritating to people with TS. Just for educational purposes for everyone who doesn't deal with this on a daily basis, I'll list somethings associated with TS. 1. Never tell them to "calm down." They cannot control it and telling them to calm down will only make them self conscious and increase ticks. 2. Don't draw attention to the individual or the ticks. Same reason as above. Treat them normally and ignore the ticks if possible. 3. If you can, just try to let everyone know the situation. The best way to handle it is to educate people on the situation. The more relaxed the individual is, the less they tick. 4. Again remember that this is uncontrollable. Completely and entirely. There is no medicine to make it go away or to make ticks stop. 5. Do what you can to let the player settle in. The more comfortable they are, the less they tick. Let them get lost in the game and you'll be surprised how you don't notice anything.
  3. I have Smitty PW's and I love them. They've held up amazingly well and fit well over my shins. I dunno why everyone has such a problem with them. As far as UA goes, I have dealt with them many times with different things and they have always been helpful. I have yet to have a problem returning anything or exchanging. Very helpful and always nice. Nothing but 5 stars all around.
  4. I trust the Champion completely. I've taken fouls, direct shots, and even a thrown bat and have yet to feel anything. No red marks, bruises, or soreness of any kind. Having said that, I will be moving up to the platinum/gold sometime soon. For what you're doing and for the price you will NOT beat the Champion hard shell. Great protector.
  5. Can't wait! My first games are Monday. Ready to get on the field. I've got that itch to call some ball haha. Good luck and don't suck!
  6. Glad to know the CP is going to someone in Mike's memory. It makes me feel good that I'm contributing is some small way to the upbringing of a new umpire! Next time you come down my way let me know, Jocko! I'd love to grab a beer to talk baseball and umpiring with you. Also if you're this way and someone cancels, let me know! I'm always happy to help!
  7. sold! close it @Thunderheads
  8. This is a huge blow to the umpiring community as a whole. I was able to chat here with Mike a few times and really enjoyed learning from his wisdom through those chats and his many posts. He will be greatly missed. I'll never forget the things I learned from him. RIP Mike.
  9. No because he already feinted. So not a drop from the rubber. very good then, Rolo for the win.
  10. I'll ignore a fan for a while, but if they persist and are getting more belligerent I will get them removed by whatever means I have at my disposal. You have authority outside the fences but you do have to use a moderator to enforce it. Believe me if you get a belligerent fan and stop the game because of the, they will be removed before I resume play. I always make it a point to introduce myself to law enforcement/security at non HS games so that if I need them I can find them easily. You DO NOT have to take crap from anybody. As far as jewelry goes, it has to come off before I will let you pitch or bat. Usually by the second inning all jewelry has been removed and we're good to go. Slows down the game you say, coach? Should have had them remove it when I told you at the plate meeting. If I see it after the second inning, then I will go into warnings and such about it. I have only had to warn once and never ejected anyone because of jewelry.
  11. Is it not a balk when he drops it, but it doesn't cross any foul lines? or does that not apply to pickoff moves?
  12. I didn't ignore anything and I'm not trying to be the worlds smartest man either. Playing devil's advocate isn't to say you're right or wrong. It's to present what could possibly be a separate viewpoint from what the whole says is correct. I never claimed to be right at all. Just trying to make you think. Sorry for trying to make you use your brain a little. I knew there was a reason I stopped posting in the situations section.
  13. this is FED. Detached player equipment doesn't apply because the glove was not thrown in an attempt to alter the live ball in flight, and this is not an illegal glove or mitt under any other rule. The ball was contacted legally with the mitt worn properly. The force of the impact caused the glove to come off, but NOT the ball to be dropped. The ball is stays in the glove (control) and the catcher picks it up and throws the ball back to the pitcher (voluntary release). I agree with the foul ball argument, but I'm also playing devil's advocate for the other side lol
  14. This situation was brought up at my High School association rules meeting. FED rules. Outs and count don't really matter, but for argument's sake we'll say it's 1 out and a 1-1 count on the batter. The pitch comes in and the batter squares to bunt. The ball hits the bat and pops up behind home plate. High enough for F2 to have a chance at it, but he doesn't realize this till it's almost too late. He spins and dives for the ball catching it in his outstretched glove. He hits the ground and the glove comes off his hand completely, but the ball remains in the glove. What is your ruling? Out or Foul Ball? and why?
  15. aaaaaand bump it lol Pictures added to the OP and still available! First come first serve!
  16. Still available! $40.00 plus shipping and this protector could be yours! Pics upon request.
  17. I have a Champion P210 Chest Protector for sale. Never used and never worn, it is in mint condition. Im asking $40.00 plus shipping. It is the riveted version. Paypal only and I must have payment before I will ship. Once I have payment, I will ship within 24-48 hours.
  18. The issue isn't the pads. They're still at 100%. It was the heat this summer that made the glue lose its stick. The same could happen to the glue holding the velcro in on an All-Star. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but both HSM's have their ups and downs I'm sure. I love my Wilson and will continue to use it until something happens to the point it is no longer usable. It has kept me will protected and I trust it to continue to do the same.
  19. I had no problems adding it to my P210. I'm 6'0 260 and there was enough strap without having to add any. I do have to tape the ends down so they don't pull back through the metal clips, but I think that's just because the holes on the clips are slightly larger than the DF straps. The DF harness is also very stretchy so it may look slightly small, but part of what makes it great is you can stretch it and when in place it pulls your protector right up against your body without allowing it room to move around.
  20. To be honest I knew it would be a matter of time before someone came along and said "Dump the Wilson, get an All Star." If I had that kind of scratch, I might look into it, but at the same time I have no issues with the Wilson. I took a varsity pitcher's fastball straight to the face mask last season and was fine afterwards. No concussion symptoms or other ill effects. I've taken quite a few shots to the mask area with it on, but that was by far the most powerful and I can't complain about anything to do with the mask. By the way, I have reattached the pads with something called "The Amazing Goop." Great stuff, glued all the pads in and 24 hours later I could even remove the smallest pads with a pair of pliers. They are in there and hopefully I won't need to attach them again. Thanks everyone for your help and don't suck next season!
  21. All in how much you get paid. Mississippi: Varsity: Plate: $65 Base: $60 JV/MS: $35 (MS games are usually played as doubleheaders which leads to $70 a night) LL: Depends on age. $25-$40 a game Dixie:$40 I believe I wish they would up pay for JV games. It's almost a wash for younger guys that only work a JV game in a far away town. And Ms doesn't have a restriction on shirt color I don't believe. We stick to the "big 3" Navy, Black, or Pro Polo Blue. Our association recommends Black for first year guys. Charcoal pants only. They recommend all black shoes, but mine have white in them. I haven't heard anything and I've stood and talked about them with my assignor before a game before. As long as they're cleaned and shiny. Hats match shirt color. Black hats worn with Pro Polo Blue. Same with ball bags.
  22. I don't know why it is, but I don't watch warm up pitches at all. I started out not watching them and veteran guys have always complemented me on my zone so I figure I shouldn't try to fix what's not broken. I'll introduce myself to the catcher as he walks out to start warm ups and then I'll move to my spot on whichever foul line is appropriate and count pitches. When the catcher throws down I move in and sweep the plate and as I move around the plate to my position I'll ask the catcher something funny like "You gonna keep me clean tonight" or "I just got these shoes, try to keep them from getting ruined" to relax both of us and let him know I'm not going to eat him alive. During the course of the game I don't chit chat. If a pitch misses close I'll just say something like "bring it in" or "bring it up" but otherwise we're both doing our jobs. I like to keep my communication relaxed with the catcher. It has helped me 100% of the time when a pitch misses and a coach goes berserk the catcher has stepped up and said "coach it missed" then turned to me and said "good call, blue." In return I'll complement a good throw down or stop on a wild pitch. I treat catchers like I'd like to be treated.
  23. Just a little tip, make sure you glue them to the helmet and not your head. That would just be wrong. No doubt lol
  24. Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a good glue/adhesive for reattaching Wilson HSM pads. The heat from last summer caused a few of the pads to shift and one of them to come off and I was wondering what would hold them in? The mask is great and I'd rather not have to buy a new one. Also, add where I can find it. (walmart, dollar general, etc.)
  25. head forward and out is signaled to the side with an "out" or "strike three." loud enough for the batter/catcher to hear. DK3 I yell "no catch" and signal safe. head forward is the key to seeing everything for me. Eyes on the situation. I may be confusing in how I describe it, but there has never been any confusion on a strike or an out when I call it.
