I think @the_umpire is the winner lol. You can zoom in on the mask and see the zipper.

I agree with everything said so far. Answer his question then if he gets angry, shut him down. Don't make yourself unavailable to answer questions, especially on a lesser known rule such as this. Might have been avoided had you seen what he had to say. Being helpful to coaches saves yourself a lot of hassle and also umpires that have that coach after you. I wondered that too, balks here don't start until 12U

He's got it for a good deal and I would really like to see what everyone is raving about with All Stars. I love my Wilson, but if All Star is any better then I'll be a happy camper.

I am completely disturbed now. Another thing that got me is how many times everyone quoted this picture. It's like every time i scrolled away it came back with vengeance lol. Therefore I refuse to quote it, but that is hilarious! Get well soon @Jocko!

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a MVP2500 that a friend of mine has for sale. I know this has been discussed, but can I do varsity games in a 2500?

That's pretty much the one thing I'm nervous about. I don't see if happening, though. (knock on wood) Never thought about that, but it would of been a pain, as my pads in my mask were glued on and it would of been a lot of work. I agree that TW's are the best pads you can buy, extremely comfortable. Mine were glued in too. About 20 minutes and a hair dryer and they can be pulled free. A little cleaning up the glue that was left and it was easy peasy.

I love my HSM, but I do use a traditional from time to time. I bought a set of the TW pads designed for army helmets from ebay and switched out the padding in my Wilson. Best $20 I've ever spent. The HSM is %100 more comfortable and seems lighter when I wear it now. I also can now take the pads out of it and wash them. My traditional is a FM25 with TW's. I'll never use anything besides TW's in my masks ever again.

not enough velcro. the OP pic has two sets of velcro on each side and the chin strap color is the same as the side straps. Not so in your pic of the Wilson.

I make sure I pregame verbal signals as well as non-verbal. I want my partner to know exactly what to listen for should we need a verbal signal such as "I've got third" or "I've got a catch/no catch." Also how to handle if a coach comes out for an explanation or asking us to get help in addition to what will happen should we dump a coach. If it is cloudy we will also pregame weather precautions and discuss if it is supposed to rain what we look for before we suspend the game. My list looks like this: 1. Fair/foul responsibilities 2. foul off the batter 3. Catch/no catch responsibilities 4. check swing 5. Signals (verbal/nonverbal) 6. D3K signal 7. IFF signal 8. Asking for help 9. Should we have to dump a coach 10. rotations 11. Tag responsibilities 12. Run downs 13. What we know about the teams as far as pitching and tendencies 14. weather conditions (if these apply) 15. Prayer

6.2.4 SITUATION J: With R1 on first base and two outs, F1 attempts to pick off R1. As F1 pivots to throw, he realizes that F3 is not on the base, but is in his normal defensive position. F1 completes the throw without interruption. The coach of the offensive team wants a balk called on F1. RULING: As long as F3 is in the proximity of the base, F1 would not be guilty of a balk. Proximity is umpire judgment and is based on whether the fielder is close enough to the base to legitimately make a play on the runner. according to the case book, it is all up to you. In your judgement, was the fielder close enough to the bag? I think this is a HTBT situation. Did he make no move toward the bag? sure. Was he still close enough to make a play? Your Judgement. I'm not going to get this balk unless it is egregious. He would have to be a mile from the bag. Definitely not going to get it if he threw to the bag and the fielder wasn't home. In @UmpJM 's sitch, I've got R3 with 2 outs and waiting for the next batter. In @Jocko 's sitch, I'd HTBT.

Hey, pitching machine league is some elite baseball! Is it possible that MLB umpires don't consider the exchange from the glove to the hand to be voluntary release? Maybe they were privy to some instructional video or meeting in which they were told that the voluntary release has to come from the non gloved hand. Who knows? lol. Obviously they saw something that they knew would qualify this as a no catch. I'm no mind reader, nor am I paid as much as these guys. Would I get an out here? Probably.

I wonder how much of the replay conversation was "was it a catch or not?" versus "What do we do with the runners?" It could've taken so long because they were discussing how to handle it. The only reason I see that the runner was left at second was that they judged had the call been a "no catch" initially then he would've made second rather than an "as the play played out" kind of thing.

Didn't almost this exact thing happen with Carl Crawford last season? Trying to be a little nonchalant and dropped the ball resulting in a no catch? I'll look up the video, but it wouldn't be the first time a fielder got caught not paying attention to what they were doing. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/27334974/v26909135/?query=carl%2Bcrawford here it is, its the post game interview, but the play is shown starting at 0:08 and better close up slo-mo view at 0:34. Same situation, same call made but without review. I think these are two classic cases of not having your head where it should be and the fielder paid for it.

I can see where he see's safe here....but....
tldavis19 replied to Thunderheads's topic in Professional
@JaxRolo nailed that one. the fielder's knee comes down right as the hand gets near the base and completely blocks the base from the umpire's view. Hard call for him to see but easy for the cameras to catch. -
I have the same problem with the leather part holding the plate one tearing. I cut the rest of the strip off and (with a little well placed velcro) have made some very nice base/plate hybrid shoes ( when life gives you lemons, right?). I spent too much on these to not get my money's worth out off them. I will say they are the most comfortable shoes I have put on my feet. I can work 3 games in a row and my feet still feel great. Very comfortable, lightweight, and durable (except for the leather strap thingy). I have the whites and they also clean up well. My partner last night couldn't believe they were almost 2 years old.

My laptop is my life source as far as my music recordings and things go. Anytime I record something new, it gets backed up to an external hard drive and to two desktops. I also use a cloud service, but it only gets updated once a month. I had my sister's cat knock a glass of water over on my old laptop a few years back and lost everything. I don't keep liquids next to my computers anymore, none of my computers are in the same room (except when I'm recording, then there's a laptop and desktop in the same room), and I will ALWAYS back up my files. The thought of losing 2 years worth of recordings, riffs, songs, and lyrics I had written gives me chills...

Excellent trade with @Jocko. Great guy to deal with and I feel I have gained a new friend.

wilson fx 2.0 or all-star system 7 helmet?
tldavis19 replied to CodyLoe15's topic in Umpire Equipment
I'll throw my $.02 in. I have to side with the Wilson here. I have used it for 2 seasons and absolutely love it. I borrowed a buddy of mine's MVP2500 for a scrimmage game and took a couple of shots on foul tips and felt dazed after taking the second shot. Kinda scary, and I have take tons of shots to my Wilson and have never had such a feeling as I did when I took that one with the All Star. Secondly, I have a rather large noggin and the Wilson sits better on my head than the all star did. Everyone else seems to love the All Star so if I were in your shoes I would try the All Star first, but don't write the Wilson off completely. It's still a very well made helmet.- 41 replies

This situation came up last week: 1 out runners at second and third. VT batting. Pitch comes in and batter swings and contacts F2's mitt and also hits the ball fair toward F1. BR breaks for first and R1 breaks for home. F1 fields and throws behind the runner to third just as the runner turns to run back to third. Run down pursues ending with R1 getting tagged out. BR made it to first easily during the rundown. It was ruled that BR was safe at first so the award on the obstruction was ignored and the runner tagged out would return to third as he was not stealing or squeezing on the play. (the coach was asked and he answered that the runner was NOT stealing or squeezing). Opinions?

If that kid can be that young AND look that professional, then no one should have an excuse not to look/dress the part! awesome! and to jump on the PU bandwagon, early in the video he gets a swinging third strike and cranks the chainsaw to call the out. Slightly overkill especially in a game of such young players.

I get excited when I actually know something, but I wanted thoroughly explain so that there was no confusion with my answer.

once you place the DH in the game, you can no longer use the DH role. Once he enters the game, you lose the right to a DH for the entirety of the game. The RF you placed in the game and the DH occupy the same position in the batting order. When you put the DH in the game, he took over that spot in the order. At that point your ex-DH/third baseman is in the 8 hole. Your new RF takes over where the old third baseman batted. the problem you encountered here is that your old RF has to occupy the 8 order in the lineup where your ex-DH/third baseman currently resides. When you put the old RF in you must now replace your ex-DH/third baseman because both individuals cannot occupy the same spot in the lineup. What makes you lose the player is that both your original RF and ex-DH are LOCKED into the 8 hole. There's no way around it. While all starters have reentry privilege, starters are also stuck with their batting order position. if you want the ex-DH to reenter, you have to remove and replace the original RF. Example: 1. Smith LF 2. James 2B 3. Jones 3B 4. Travis SS 5. Ashley CF 6. McGee 1B 7. Parsons C 8. Harrison RF 9. Gregg p DH. Benjamin Benjamin is DH for Harrison in RF Harrison and Jones are pulled. Benjamin replaces Jones on the field at 3B but MUST remain in the 8 hole Rice replaces Harrison in RF but bats in the vacant 3 hole left by Jones. You decide you want to pull Rice and put Harrison back in RF you MUST put Harrison back in the 8 hole that Benjamin currently resides in therefore removing Benjamin from the game. You cannot put Benjamin back as a DH because by putting him in the field, you have permanently burned the DH position. Benjamin having DH'd for the 8 hole is also tied to the 8 hole and cannot be put in the vacant 3 hole because of this. Therefore you must find a new third baseman to occupy the 3 hole. Think of it like this. the DH and who they bat for are one person. you cannot put one person in two positions on the field or in two separate spots on your batting order. Can he reenter? Yes, but if he does so you must remove the original player being DH'd for thus burning the RF for the rest of the game because he has already reentered. Technically the third baseman CAN return, but you must remove the RF at that time. I hope this answers your question.

I agree with everybody. I see nothing wrong with anything you did. Sounds to me like you handled everything appropriately.

I have a Wilson HSM that is in need of a paint job. It is the matte finish that feels kind of rubbery and I was wondering if there was a good paint that could be used to repaint this helmet or if it is even possible. I'm pretty good with spray paint and making things look good using only spray paint (I've done several guitars with nothing but spray paint from autozone that people swear look as good as from the factory). I've searched and there's plenty on painting/powdercoating the cage, but nothing on painting the shell itself. Not trying to be fancy, just want to improve the look a little.
