  1. I'm glad this got brought back to life. MidAm's comments on common sense on the field are something I have worked all year on. Reading that article today in Referee just drove home the point, to me anyway, that is what separates good umpires from exceptional umpires
  2. I do pretty much as was described by Manny except when I swing out I have a new ball in hand and getting the pitcher's attention to receive the ball I'm about to throw to him. Same reason as Manny stated earlier, if the pitcher is looking at me with the ball he can't get in a stare down with the batter. He gets the batter's attention, I get the pitcher's. There's more than one way to diffuse a potential situation 😜
  3. That's what I had noumpere. It should be TOP but in this case it all works out the same
  4. I was thinking exactly the same thing
  5. Mine is on its way!
  6. MidAm, how far were you and the coach apart when the conversation took place over the missed pitch? Was he on the steps of the dugout? I would have laughed my a$$ of hearing that. How can a coach argue with your answer?!!?
  7. Snare, I think the commercial is pretty cool too but just check out where the PU's head is for the left handed batter. Kind of caught my eye and messed it up for me
  8. Red, that was a once in a lifetime horse and seeing that picture brought back some great memories with my grandfather. That is a pretty good line on A-rod. For someone that pretty much only listens to the FAN and ESPN in the car I'm surprised I hadn't heard that one before. The Rangers are killing me, they are really struggling and need to get it in gear. As for the other team you mentioned, they can't lose enough for me!!
  9. Blue they are getting $119 for the retro on the gold. It takes about 4 weeks on the turn around. I guess with the number of retros they are doing from the guys on this site alone you won't see it quicker than that 😡. They got mine on 1/2 and I was told to expect it back the first week of Feb
  10. I agree with Matt. The batter is out on the penalty strike. The ball remains alive and runners other than the BR can advance
  11. Correction, not the OP just the R1 ground ball 4-3
  12. In the OP I would be anticipating a play at 2nd and watching hopefully for a clean slide lol
  13. Thanks guys I missed that part of Rich's post
  14. Rich, how come no ESPN this year? I always enjoy watching the tournament
  15. Just shows how things are taught differently with different associations. I got dinged in an evaluation for rotating up to third on a ball that never left the infield 👎
  16. I think I've watched it 4 times already. My wife threw out that line yesterday when she caught me snacking on chocolate. It's not on my off season diet 😡
  17. That's hysterical!! What did the coach do or say. I'm just afraid that would go over like a fart in church Call strikes...Pat
  18. Hopefully Santa brings us lots of gear and books to get us all thru the winter. Merry Christmas all Call strikes...Pat
  19. If we're still talking about the same thing (and I'm not sure we are), in the OP, R3 is the "previous" runner that the rule speaks about. R1 is a following runner to R3 and a preceding runner to the BR. Perfect, thank you, that clears it up for me. I was taking R1 as a previous runner not a following runner. That's how I was applying what Carl had written wrong. I knew I had to be missing something important. Just trying to get better at this. Thanks again and Merry Christmas all Call strikes...Pat
  20. Jocko, thanks for the references. I have read this thread from start to finish. Until I read the passage I quoted in Carl's book I was totally in agreement with the posts you pointed out. My question was, how am I applying what Carl wrote wrong? There's something I have to be missing.
  21. OK so I'm just reading a little bit because I woke up too early this morning. On the nightstand I have Carl Childress' book, 151 Ways to Ruin A Baseball Game. I received it last week with the BRD and I consider this a lighter read than some of the other books and manuals I have on my winter reading list. Back to my point On pages 32-33 situation 18, Cancel a run improperly, the second to last paragraph states, "In spite of those third-world plays, though, the major rules that govern scoring are simple. No run may score if the third out is made by: a runner being forced out. the batter-runner before he reaches first safely. a previous runner called out on appeal for missing a base." So now if I'm applying what he's saying to the OP correctly, I have to change my opinion and say the run does not score because of a previous runner called out on an appeal for missing a base that would be the third out. Time play or force play is doesn't seem to matter. I'm certainly no expert but I would love to get a correct ruling on this. Let me know if I'm applying this right :hopmad:
  22. My Rules By Topic arrived today. That has been a big help to me. Started reading through it already Call strikes...Pat
  23. Here's where you just have to umpire. 99.9999999999999% of the people at the ball park will be watching the ball and the play at 1B. Ball always has priority, R1's touch of 2B is your secondary responsibility. You get what you can get with the secondary responsibilities, but the ball is your primary responsibility. Thanks for the confirmation Johnny. I figured that was the way to go with it. Hopefully 100% of the place is watching the ball lol
