Perception and reality...probably not much difference in either in terms of measurable distance, but the left leg in the SF balkthe leg is stiff, the throw is "peg legged" body still pretty vertical. Perception, he didn't step -> balk. In the SD, left knee bent, body moving towards base. Perception: -> no balk.

Yeah, I need a better catch too; but do the MLB guys have that leeway? With the cameras on them (and I'm sure that is data being sent to observers) are the days of "need a better catch" over for them? Does every call they make need to be by-the-book now? Fans apparently want it by the book, but I don't think the guys in the game like it.

A list of Equipment For Umpires That Went Down in Flames
GerryB replied to jkumpire's topic in Umpire Equipment
Hutch/Reach Randy Marsh CP. Looked great, but made of plywood, or something like it! -
I think he should have been dumped. Is West old school "let 'em play"?
-
Like others I had one starting out...then had a rotation to 3rd, as I was running let it off my right shoulder holding the inside handle with my left hand...bam! I went right down as my feet got tangled in the right shoulder strap. Made the call on my butt in front of the 3rd base dugout, to many laughs.
-
The ball was there, but in the side replay the 3rd baseman lifted his glove up and didn't get a tag on until the runner until after he hit the bag. Might that have been the sourse of conversation?..."he missed me!"..."the ball was there".... Classic fielder getting his glove out to avoid injury...but we all know he's out. Aside; for all those fans who are harping about Meals and the supposed need for replay, what happens when a play like this is reviewed?
-
He did, but my issue with 3BLX (but I do what I'm told) are the blocking the plate plays.

Good eject. DB trying the old go-about-my-business f-bomb; the media will believe my denial. Takes me back to the old days...

Original Wilson West Vest - not the Original (Douglas) West Vest

As an grizzled veteran used to say...t#ts to the ball! Of course, if he had turned, but not stepped that's exactly where he would have been hit!

Good call, poor mechanics ..Hawk's still a DB!
GerryB replied to Thunderheads's topic in Professional
Around here we've had some HCs start to teach that the runner in a run down should run at the fielder. So at first run I thought that was it, but those replays show Dunn in Hunter's path, then moving simulatneously with Hunter. I've got obstruction.- 21 replies

The wings have always untucked for me, even with the refit. I just retuck them, If the pads are on the protector, they are there for a reason.

TW double feature last night! Semi-Pro wood bat; first foul hit my refit WG on the wing where there's TW, but no plastic. A sting, but nothing lasting. Later a foul off the chin of my Honig/TW. It was hard but no scrambled brains. TW a winner again.

Geezer Alert, Old Man looking for Breathable CP
GerryB replied to jkumpire's topic in Umpire Equipment
Actually I had those old Wilsons, the tan and blacks. Spotbilts for shoes! Moved to a +POS BB203 in '85. Tried a "Randy Marsh" Hutch/Reach CP hated it, sold it (though it looked cool), then an original Douglas WV when I missed the boat on the Donzis and the Riddells. I still have the Yeager dangler, somewhere. -

Ouch - Rawlings PWM1 w/Steve Yeager dangler and the "George Barr" Wilson CP over a cotton T. Those were the days! -
Yep, a good deal, not paying for two sets of pads...I have two Honigs/TW.

Hadn't seen this before. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mizuno-Baseball-referee-inside-protector-for-Umpire-Black-2YA455/181163333727?_trksid=p2047675.m2109&_trkparms=aid%3D555012%26algo%3DPW.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D16098%26meid%3D8591152008737586022%26pid%3D100010%26prg%3D7683%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D181163330764%26 Priced to move. Will TW upgrade the pads?

What helped me was making sure the back of the harness was completely above the outside of the hat's sweat band.

The Red Sox radio announcers were all over Holbrook on this one...I think it is a tough call to make, hand, base glove all fairly close.
-
Yeah, they were both filthy, I loved it! When I started calling ball, the word was always wear a dirty cap...you won't look like a rookie!

My thought too...not that I'm always in the right spot on rotations but he needed to be 2BX for either call...late start?, quick play?
