  1. Please read the post above mine.. 1 more time..
  2. I will say this one more time... when I was at PBUC this year ( 2011) Gary Cederstrom told us the MLB umps have had there shirts custom made just for these cooling pads. They are not after market zippers put in there shirts.. I have listen to about 4 MLB umps talk about this.
  3. Chris these are new this year..Only MLB Umps can get them right now.
  4. No it is actually a zipper, it is for the new cooling devices made, they made this to help the MLb umpires...We got to hear it from Gary Cederstrom at PBUC. it is pretty cool.
  5. Yes Harry's teaches the slot, so does Jim's and PBUC...
  6. alot of the time the catchers set up on the inside, and the batters are on top of the plate, we are taught to see the pitch coming out of the pitchers hand, if your really in the slot on these times your not gonna see it, so to fix it you need to get back and work up. and yes you will be over the catchers head. it happens. this is when you really rely on where the catcher catches the ball.
  7. he was in the slot, but the catcher was inside as well...he got blocked out. when your blocked out you have to move up and back..
  8. well, well... I think I can sell you on Harry;s... you want to learn how to umpire go to Harry's.. you want to learn the rules go to Jim's..( but I will put our chief instructor right up there with anyone on the rules) if you want to have fun and learn go to Harry's, if you want to go to a Boot Camp style run school go to Jim's.. If you want some of the best instructors around, go to Harry's..if you want to stay on the beach ( and yes that is really, really nice to wake up to everyday) go to Harry's.. hotels at both schools are ok.. My partner in the CPL is a grad from Jim's and we had some really good talks, for the most part they are about the same..but I highlighted some big ones... at the PBUC school, you will have everything on site, and great food.. the Instructors are all Milb and MLB guys .. it is 28 days no days off ( i loved having a day off at school).. but what ever you choose will be a great experience that you will never forget.
  9. Fair enough - in pro ball, this is a legal play. Are there any levels of youth baseball that this would be legal as well? It's clear obstruction in Fed - that I know. NCAA added the phrase "not in the act of fielding the ball" in 2011. SO now NCAA is enforced like OBR in this regard. LL requires possession but makes an allowance for the "train wreck" You also need to read the Approved ruling on this.... A.R. 1: If the fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the throw, he may be considered “in the act of fielding the ball.â€
  10. thank you cactus... college wood bat league..
  11. Depends on where the pitcher steps? If he steps toward the base, then legal
  12. So when the ump responsible for the catch delays the call, does he verbalize it or just give the right fist for the out? Verbalizing the catch might confuse the runner and coaches and lead to some discussion after the play. If it is a routine catch, there is no need to say or signal anything.. the old lady with trifocals on 20 rows deep saw the catch right? so there is no need to signal...LOL
  13. That's what she said....... (Sorry, Mazz, couldn't pass up that opportunity.-LOL and a BOG-Big Ol' Grin) good one dave... I need to call you ..LOL
  14. 1st off why is your strike one that small? Any part of the ball that touches is a strike right? Who are the only people who can see the pitch that close? I give a ball off the plate on both sides.. ( if the catcher is set up and sticks that close pitch) I'm getting that all day.. your strike zone does not need to look like a MLB Umpires strike zone... open it up a little
  15. my thing is the games hasnt even started, so he really isnt arguing balls and strikes...
  16. I think you could have done it different.. if he came out like he did and ask that question?.. tell him I see what I call and I call what I see.. if the ball touches the plate in the zone you'll get it...and then ....your off the hook.. But telling him your not gonna argue balls and strikes..is coming off as a red ass ass and unapproachable ...
  17. If you stand at the Point of the plate you will see all.. or even off toward the 3rd base side staying in the dirt area, you will be able to see.
  18. I just turned 36.. and went to Umpire school and PBUC.. And there was a guy who was 41 a couple of years ago that got in the game.
  19. Yes you are going crazy.... But yes we are suppose to do that.. just like echoing when a ball goes out of play, you and your partner should call time as well.
  20. BY rule you have to grant them the appeal for a check swing.. who gives a rats ass where your partner is.. are you telling me that in "B" or "C" you can tell if a batter "attempted" to hit a pitch? Call what you see , see what you call... when the Catcher or coach/manage ask for help on a check swing.. ask your partner... be an approachable umpire..
  21. You are suppose to echo the balk call,so every umpire knows.. But in the MLB there are sometimes 50K plus fans .. you might not hear a "balk " call....
  22. I know this one very well.. 6.05k... hell I can right it down verbatim ..LOL
