  1. Illegal in both pitching positions..
  2. Your are suppose to go behind the body, the only reason big league guys do it, is because of TV.. that way the TV watchers can see the called strike...
  3. I was umpiring a Showcase tourney this weekend.. and a few things happened that have never happen to me.. I had 2 not 1 but 2 , 3 pitch innings...that was cool.. cause it was 100* and the humidity.. And then I had backswing interference twice.. once the runner was coming back into 1st.. and the other was on a swinging 3rd strike and the batter knocked the ball out of his glove. Pretty cool.
  4. Roger, this is not Batter INT the batter did nothing to interfere he is just kicking dirt...dont go booger picking on stuff like this.
  5. They need to work on their working area....LOL
  6. After rereading the OP.. I see he said the batter fouled off the pitch, but it was not a pitch as the Pitcher legally disengaged the rubber and threw home to retire a runner... This is INT on the batter, and less than 2 outs runner is out.. 2 outs the batter is out. 6.06c I also said a balk for throwing to a unoccupied base, but since I reread I saw the pitcher stepped off.. so no balk, I think it was mtaylor who corrected me..LOL
  7. If you had a runner on 1st, does he need to be advancing to get the balk? Same rule applies here..LOL
  8. Cant enforce both, on this play, we had this play at PBUc...LOL
  9. This play your talking about is not a Force play. 2.00 Force play.. A play in which a runner legally loses his right to occupy a base by reason of the batter becoming a runner..LOL Can you tell we had to learn this one at school...LOL
  10. Do I need to rethink my HP play positioning? This is the second clip I see (first was Joe West in the RH batter's box when Posey got crashed) with the PU in the RH batter's box to call the play. I'm thinking being that close you are only going to see the tag or the foot touch but not both. Being furthor away like most of us are taught might be better. But, those guys know more than me. actually that was the LH hitters batters box Joe was in...LOL
  11. It can be.. look at my last post..LOL
  12. What about a balk for throwing to an Unoccupied base? If R1 ( for example) starts to run to 2nd but stops ( and in umpire judgment) goes back but the pitcher throws to 2nd it can be called a back for throwing to an Unoccupied base.. ( once again this is umpire judgment as too whether or not the runner was actually attempting to advance). So if the umpire thinks the runner was not advancing. call the balk.. so no you advance R3 and batter stays at bat. But if not then you interference 6.06c... less than 2 outs runner is out, if not the batter is out.
  13. Look at the easton ultra lites.. very good come in 3 different colors lens, Black, amber, and Blue.. the amber really makes the ball stand out better... plus they only cost 30 bucks.. I almost like them better than Oakley's.
  14. Ned to tag him with the glove or the ball in hand.. just a arm touching the runners body is not a tag... you have nothing unless it is intentional INT.
  15. Yes it can look really good.. but you can get away without signaling the swinging strike, just show the no catch, the the out when F2 touched the plate. Either way is gonna work, but if evaluators can make it simpler or easier for us umpires, it can work.
  16. But you see how much that is.. that is 3 things... They are trying to minimize the amount of signaling we do as umpires.. too much and guys get flustered..LOL Who is this "they" of which you speak? MLB was the ones that came up with it to avoid confusion. It adheres to the basic principle of umpiring, call in the order they happened. Batter struck out, show it, catcher missed the ball, show safe, then if he tags the batter, call him out. It is three plays that require three calls. yes it does, but if you think about how fast all 3 of these things can happen. It looks crazy to see the PU so fast.. signal a strike, safe " no catch" and then a tag on the BR..

  18. I saw that game on TV MidAmUmp...

  21. Well if you have never meet Paul, he is one of the nicest guys around and maybe one of the best instructors around. This is a great example of what is call a "read step" Very good job...and a great signal he is selling it very well.. I guess you can see why he was the Chief instructor at Harry's for a while huh?.. Also at PBUC they want us to set up farther way from the play, that way you can see the whole play... I know you have been told to focus on the front of the base to see the touch of the base from the runner and listen to the pop in the glove.. they still want you to look for that.. but if your farther away, you can see it all happen.

    Obstruction?

Carolina got it.... This is usually something.. but if F3 is getting out of the way fast then let it go. and your play at home with F2 and BR. you can have OBS or INT.. a lot of the time it is nothing.
  23. Make this simple... if it is a obvious Uncaught 3rd strike ( like the balls rolls away and everyone can see it) there is no reason to signal safe and verbalize "No catch" as everyone see's the ball on the ground. Just point your right hand out to the side just like a fair ball, If the ball is very close to where people are not sure, give the safe sign and says "no catch"... The problem is the PU is trying to do to much, signal a swinging strike, then a no catch, then maybe a tag. it is way to many signals for the PU to make. Make it simple.. it will make you better.
  24. Yep 2 bases for the overthrow...
