Hello fellow umpires, I'm seriously thinking about going to the Mid American Camp this year.  Is anyone else going?

I'm not going, but I have gone before. You should go! It's a great camp!

Thanks. I am pretty confident I'm going.  Did you get your own room while there or share with a fellow camper?  It's an 11 hour drive from here, so may fly and just get my own room.

I had a roommate when I went last time. If I go again, I would get my own room because I'm older and crabbier now. 🙂

Obligatory...(he said he sleeps when HE wants "without interruptions"...)

Championship Sunday...

Random Umpire#1: I thought @wolfe_man was on this game today to close camp?

Random Umpire#2: Nah, he ain't worked a game the entire week of camp.

Random Umpire#1: Wow...so, he's workin' hard in his room on his mechanics and rule book study?

Random Umpire#2: Nah...he just told his family he was "going to umpire camp" so he could enjoy a quiet hotel room to himself with the A/C cranked and get caught up on his sleep this week...

Random Umpire#1: (thousand yard stare...) That's a pro move right there...

Radom Umpire#2: That's Wolfe...always with the pro moves...

By my calculations, you could drive it for about $200 in gas[1] (granted 11 hours isn't "nothing", but I drove to Cincinnati from about 2 hours west of KC a couple of years ago - it's not SO bad) AND you get to write off $900 for your mileage on your taxes.

I used an AirBNB to save more money when I've been to that location. Based on last year's 3-man camp (mostly the same instructors), I wouldn't do that now that they have the hotel closer than some of the parking spaces you could get otherwise. If I was going this year, I'd stay at the camp hotel.

You really don't *need* a rental car, either if you're staying at the hotel. Getting to and from the airport to the hotel is the main thing. After that, there will be plenty of guys around that would be happy to give you a ride to any restaurants, etc.

Dang, I might have to come up some time during your camp just to meet you face-to-face.

I'm doing the two man.  It's from 9/5 - 9/8.

I will be there the following week for the 3 umpire.

You're further up the road than me, my friend.  Maybe in a few years. :)

Has anyone stayed in the Holiday Inn located right at the complex?  I've reserved a room there, but the reviews are not good - especially concerning water pressure, atmosphere, breakfast, etc.  For $200+ a night I expect closer to excellent amenities and reviews.

For closer to $150, I can stay in much nicer hotels (Marriott, Hilton, Drury Inn, etc) less than 15 minutes away at the airport.  I will have a car, so transportation is not an issue.  It looks like much better food options up near the airport too.

If you don't want to put anything negative out "over the air" here, then please feel free to IM me with your feedback.  I found it a little odd that the actual camp website didn't recommend a hotel, now I'm wondering if that was intentional or not.

One other question, if I schedule a flight home for 3pm on Sunday - is that too early?  I see it's live games on Sat with breakout sessions and an evening session... but Sunday just says live games with no sessions.  I'm assuming most go back home on Sunday to be back at their jobs on Monday morning, right?   Or do I need to plan for another night there and fly back Monday?

We don’t recommend a hotel because so many decide to do Airbnb’s or other options and it’s becoming more difficult to deal with getting a discounted group rate with hotels.

I’ve personally stayed at the hotel at Creekside. I haven’t experienced any issues that you’ve mentioned. The breakfast is your typical HIE breakfast.

As far as Sunday goes, book your flight and you’ll tell us when you need to be at the airport. We will make sure you’re done with your games and get to the airport in plenty of time.

Excellent feedback! Thank you. That makes me more comfortable. I’m a planner and I’ve got everything ready to go, but started to second-guess it when I found those reviews.

Thanks again! I’m really looking forward to coming and learning!

I was really looking forward to getting to this camp, but unfortunately for me it's about the only weekend that is non-negotiable schedule wise.

Are there other camps that offer an equivalent experience/ instruction level this fall? I always got next year I suppose.
