This. Was working a HS easter tourney here in TN, and a team from IL was playing. R1, I am PU, rotation is on, B1 bangs one in the gap, play at 3B on R1, (the team from IL was on offense) and I make the call at 3B from right on top of it. I hear from their crowd "way to get down the line blue! Nice job! I dont hear much, but you can be dam sure I heard that. And so did my partner, as he asked me post game if i heard it.

might be, with trouble getting umpires and all, much less those who have lost a step and know they cannot sprint from a deep A due to 1B playing back, to beat a speedy runner to 2B, regardless of whether they rim the diamond or come in and pivot. They might just want to think about starting 1BU in the infield to start with. Is the umpire embarrassed now that they cannot beat the runner, sure and they give it up. But, maybe, just maybe, if they could start on the infield from the get go they may hang in a couple more years. The PU always has the fair/foul catch/no catch down the left field line all game anyway with the BU in A, B and C.

So expanding that same play down right field for PU all the time, and BU starting in B might keep guys in the game longer. and no i am not talking about till 110 years old either. of course i have seen games where teams got normal base hits all day long, or the batter walked and 1BU spent 98% of the time in B and C all day anyway. In that game the PU had lots of balls down the left and right field line and catch no catch for all 100% of the line calls that game any way. And in that game the PU had the line and diving catch/no catch within a foot of the line, 1 in left and 1 in right field with the BU in B once and C once, the coach did come out and asked if the PU he could check, just on the diving catch/no catch not the fair foul within a foot of the line. They got together and the catch call, out, stood.

And, if an umpire gets a foot injury where they can move some but not 100%, working a few games from only B and C would help, rather than not have a field umpire at all due to availability. Would imagine that situation of an injured umpire working the infield from B and C only has happened somewhere sometime anyway.

@dumbdumb this makes a ton of sense - usually when I have an immobile partner we park him at the plate. But I like your thoughts better.

CC in his "mechanics for the 21st century" (or some title like that) proposed starting in B.  It's not a new idea.

it is happening. DH with Toro. First game he takes plate and I take everything else. Second game he stays at plate except sometimes we switch and he does bases in B/C. But I think Carl wanted everyone to switch. Which is not needed for all.

A few times I've had immobile partners work an entire game from C.  It wasn't a good look.  Particularly in softball where it is a deep C.  I had one partner that I dubbed his calls at first base "deep C fishing."

I can understand the idea of starting in B, but I don't care for it for me.  I do NOT like standing in one spot for most of the day.  That is when I get stiff and sore (especially when I'm battling this damned stiff back issue I am getting almost annually now).  I want to be moving and running ... or what passes for running with me.  Sorry to say guys, this is an advantage softball has for me right now.  Even though the field is smaller, you move a hell of a lot more on the bases than yo do with baseball.

I have done some small field baseball in tournaments ... it took me a game or two to realize, "Hey, softball mechanics work better here!"
