NFHS - Ejected coach; where must he go?

Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 1424 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

Question

Posted

The high school varsity coach was ejected last night for continuing to argue with the umpire behind the plate.  Coach went into the stands and then down towards right field fence.  The umpire told him to leave the confines of the park.  Can't he stay and watch or must he be out in the parking lot, etc?

Likewise, I would question any coach that demanded an adult umpire.

Oh, but they do, @beerguy55! Their demands are just veiled as the verbal assaults coaches cast upon young umpires. I realize that this topic thread is set in High School, and you are likely addressing that. But, make no mistake, “coaches” attitudes and actions are the bulk of the concerns regarding young umpire retention.

You think a 14... heck, I’ll be fair... a 16 year old (so they can drive themselves) umpire can officiate a 10U baseball game? How about a 12U? Of course they can, capability -wise! What’s often preventing them or souring them on doing so? Coach (and parent) behavior. In so many words, coaches want older umpires. I’m not entirely certain as to why, but the amount of grief they get – not because they’re right or wrong or any better or any worse than any other official – but simply because they’re “too young”.

I don't disagree.  There is very much a passive aggressive approach to young umpires - and that needs to be rooted out an punished..harshly.   If for no other reason than to keep those umps in the game.   In my experience though, the "adult" coach is really trying to assert authority over the younger ump...not necessarily questioning their ability due to their age (though it does happen).  The argument is for the next call and it's an act of manipulation, not derision.

Believe me, though they'll never admit it, those particular coaches WANT that young ump ("you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall")...because they think they can control a younger ump...and then they have a ready-made excuse if they lose.

I have heard some coaches and parents immediately question an ump's age, but I'm finding that more the exception (at least the explicit component)...but I've also seen many younger umps do their jobs effectively and without incident...receiving no more grief than an experienced ump.

Frankly, for me, I get more frustrated with the old-timers...the ones who "should" know better, and don't.  The younger umps I can easily forgive mishaps to experience.   I also am able to check my ego at the gate and not feel the need to have an ump doing my bidding.

I have seen 16 year old umps very effectively call men's league games in both baseball and fastpitch.   MOST coaches/players, in my experience, will treat umpires on a meritocracy...they don't care if you're old, young, black, white, male, female, gay, straight - you're either good at your job or you're not...and you either want to get better or you don't.

Where have we landed with this?

Is it up to the state if there's no other coaches available?

Should we leave & suspend the game if there no other school-affiliated adult on site? (AD, teacher, principal, etc...)?

I firmly believe this.  In our association we will always send an experienced umpire with a young one, always.
