softball test question #1

R1 is on first base when B2 hits a ground ball to F4. F4 is in the baseline between first and second when she misplays the ball. R1 crashes into F4 as she attempts to recover the ball. The correct call is:

For FED softball the answer is “a” and here are the supporting rules--

2015 NFHS Rule 8 SECTION 6 THE RUNNER IS OUT

ART. 10 . . . The runner interferes:

a. with a fielder attempting to make the initial play on a fair batted ball

2015 NFHS Softball Rule 2 SECTION 47 “PLAY BALL, ” MAKE A PLAY, INITIAL PLAY

ART. 3 . . . Initial Play. A fielder is considered to be making an initial play on a fair batted ball when she:

c. Fails to gain control of the batted ball and is within a step and a reach (in any direction) of the spot of the initial contact.

I don't do softball, but I'd say B.   Wait to see what happens, if she gets the out then no harm - but if she doesn't get the out herself, then interference on the runner who didn't avoid the protected fielder.

Which rule set?   FED, ASA/USA Softball, International rules, etc.

Almost certain it's A.   If the step and reach doesn't apply then it's D.

It's certainly not B - the fact of F4 simply misplaying the ball is no reason to call a delayed dead ball.   It would be a delayed dead ball - fist out - after the crash (If it is indeed obstruction), or at the moment the fielder hinders the runner.

 

Certainly not C.

I know 2 things about softball that are factual:

1- It is bigger than a baseball

2-It's not soft

I misread it.  What I thought I saw was interference with the runner impeding the fielders' right to make a play.  But, as you pointed out, the answer B says " When F4 misplays the ball, the umpire will give the delayed dead-ball signal and wait to see what happens." so clearly they want you to focus on the entire play versus just the interference, so it can't be right.

I should have known better than to speak up on a softball post.

Why do these tests have to be so wordy with their questions?
