Best replies you ever gave a coach/player/fan?

College tournament. 3-man crew. Runner on 1b only. Pitcher throws to 1b on a pick off throw. The throw beats the runner by 10 feet & the 1b tries to swipe tag the runner trying to get back to 1b. But the runner was so picked off that the 1bman swipes & misses the tag. I call "Out!"

The 3b coach yells over, "But he didn't tag him!"

I responded, "I didn't say he tagged him. I called him out!"

Not something I said to a coach but something and umpire said to me when I was playing.  First pitch of at bat a pitch I thought was high was called a strike.  I proceed to strike out swinging in the at bat.  Walking back to the dug out not yelling I told the umpire he missed the first strike.  He looked at me without missing a beat and told me I missed the last two.  Last time I said something like that to an umpire.  Haven't had the right chance to use that line myself yet.

So you called an out with no tag? Explain this to me.

Really? I need top explain that to you? He was picked off by a country mile! Umpiring 101, do not reward bad base running & do not split hairs on tags. If it looks like an out, call an out. Simple.

The baserunning couldn't have been that bad if he was able to legally avoid the tag when he was as good as picked.

By the same logic, you could have refused to reward poor defense by F3 for being unable to apply a tag on a baserunner who, by all rights, was a sitting duck.

Good umpires call what they see, not what they think should have happened, regardless of potential fallout from coaches, players or fans. To do otherwise is a disservice to the players competing on the field. Do your job and don't insert yourself into the game.

Just my opinion.

Always look for strikes and outs when you can. It was that bad! Perception is reality. Don't over think umpiring. Don't remember asking for your opinion. Did you see the title of this post?

18U batter swings at a pitch that was a bit high. Catcher throws the ball back to the pitcher and batter turns to me and says "was that pitch a ball?" I say, "No, it was a strike, you swung at it."

So, we have Obstruction called on the third baseman as runner rounds 3B headed to home. Obstructed runner is forced to go back as the throw comes to home from the outfield. My partner awards the runner at third home. Defensive head coach comes out of dugout and says this gem, "But the contact was out of bounds!". Later the next inning, first base coach comes up to me and asks how obstruction can occur with the contact "out of bounds". I ask him to clarify what he means by "out of bounds" and he says, "you know, foul ground." I am trying hard not to laugh at how stupid this sounds and tell him that whether the contact occurs in fair or foul territory is irrelevant--all that is required is that the defense alters the intended path of the runner advancing to a base. He looks at me like a deer in the headlights and walks off.

At this point, I couldn't hold it any longer and started laughing. I am pretty sure he was pissed off that I was laughing, but what is a guy to do when something this stupid is brought up by the coaching staff!

I had a coach yesterday on a tagged third out on a BR heading to 1st ask me if the run counted, umm, no. Not really a funny question normally but one of these coaches is a HS assistant coach and the other was a HS AD. They actually wanted a ruling on it from the site director, which I promptly denied. I just walked away shaking my head and trying not to laugh.

Last night, popup foul and F2 runs into me as the ball goes out of play. He says "that's obstruction" He also joked that next time he'd just run me over. I told him I'd make the call from my back.

I'm pretty sure my partner or I, in the last 3 games I've done with that team, have had at least one obs call per game.

 

Last week, foul ball by at least 8'. Bench was Fisking it fair as I came back from the call. I Fisked it foul back at them.

I have seen this before and called a runner safe. They had him picked and the 1st basement swiped right over the top, never touched him. Thats like calling a runner out just cause "the ball beat him". I understand the expected call, but I call what I see. That's all any of us can do.

But on top of that telling the coach you didnt have a tag but he is out, is pretty crazy. I'm shocked you didn't have to eject him after that.

Protest?  Just saying that is not protestable. The call is "Out", not "Tagged him". Its the WORDING.

I'm still struggling with OP.  There was no tag, the umpire knew there was no tag, called the runner out anyway, and essentially admitted it to everyone? If GoodCall is working college ball he has a lot more experience than me but I don't see how intentionally making the wrong call and admitting it is Umpiring 101. I guess I have even more to learn than I thought.

on tag plays, there are times when u cannot be certain if a tag is actually applied. no way, can anybody see a tag 100% of the time.

this post was about responses to situations, not a course in umpiring.

These responses are just responses to your response, not a course in how to umpire..

Although it seems to be a fair majority (of high level umpires) that believes/won't say what you did for obvious reasons

Do you call off the plate strikes? Do you believe in "the vicinity" call?

You are taking the wording wrong. The call itself is not "Tagged" or "Not tagged" but "Out" or "Safe". KISS = Keep It Short & Simple
