  1. Everyone should have a different ruling on this.

    Force out

By doing this, you are running the risk of being tagged by the defense prior to the defense stepping on 2nd base. In which case, you are out on the force out and so is the runner on 1st coming to 2nd. A double play.
  3. Softball has the same rules for runner interference on a batted ball. The outcome would be exactly the same as baseball on this play. Runner out on interference, dead ball, BR to 1st.
  4. I do this as much as possible to be aware of how the pitch might approach the zone, but seeing how the pitch was thrown is only a starting guide for me. Many times pitches don't go where you think they might end up (at least at the levels of ball I call).

    foul ball

"Foul!" Pointing to R3, "Don't do that!"
  6. I know @basejester and I have worked with @goody14. Would love to be able to work with some others here. Maybe when my kids get older and I have more time to devote to taking games further from home.
  7. This is a view of the 3rd base dugout from the 1st base side. Since the only thing stopping a ball from entering the dugout are the wrapped poles/posts, it most likely did exactly what @ALStripes17 described.
  8. Sounds like it could have passed F3 in the OP. He dove and missed the catch.
  9. oops, got it...thanks
  10. OP says "Legion ball so OBR"...I wasn't going with NCAA rules.
  11. The way I read this, the runner is not on a pop-up slide. He slid beyond the base, then "popped-up", making contact with F4. I've got interference all day on this. The initial safe from the force out is nothing. Only difference (and this is HTBT) is did the interference stop the put out of the BR? Yes, get two here, otherwise, you end up with exactly what you called. Using @Mad Mike's posting of the bona fide slide rule #3 is able and attempts to remain on the base (except home plate) after completion of the slide. OP description says he did not remain on the base after completion of the slide.
  12. Me as a coach to every player I have ever coached...."when you hit the ball, run until the umpire calls foul." PU could not see that pant leg brush of the ball as it was on the opposite side of Cabrera's body. Obviously it did not make any sound like a ball hitting the shin can sometimes. U3 has the best look at it, but until you see it in slow motion, it's hard to tell it actually hit Cabrera. Definitely kicked the call, but I don't think it is reviewable and if U3 didn't see it hit Cabrera, how can he call it?
  13. From the 1st base dugout camera angle I am seeing it at the front knee in slow motion. I can't place where the plate is from that view, but Ross looks like he is back in the box. I'm getting that one most of the time especially at the lower level ball I see.
  14. The Cal Ripken rules are very similar to LL. Slight modification to OBR. As long as he only has 9 players on the field, except the pitcher and catcher, they can be stationed where the coach directs them. And as @grayhawk says...you should be able to take advantage of a situation with 5 outfielders.
  15. 18U batter swings at a pitch that was a bit high. Catcher throws the ball back to the pitcher and batter turns to me and says "was that pitch a ball?" I say, "No, it was a strike, you swung at it."
  16. Crap. Thanks. I'll get that one right from now on.
  17. 18U Baseball, OBR, R2, less than 2 outs, I'm PU. F1 pitches, R2 starts to steal 3rd, ball hits the dirt just beyond the plate, F2 misses the ball and it ends up between my left arm and my CP though just pinned there by the force of the ball not trapped in my equipment or in my shirt. F2 turns around looking for the ball and as I stand up and take a step back the ball drops from its spot. I ruled Ball on the pitch and UI and made R2 return to 2nd. Did I get this right?
  18. I got as far as IAW yesterday in an 16-18 game. Luckily for him, the HT reached the ahead by 10 after 5 two batters later. That is as close as I have been this year.
  19. Your link for the FAQ page seems to be broken. Just wanted to give you a heads up. One day, I plan on coming out for this clinic, hopefully in the next couple of years.
  20. From the pictures, that doesn't look like an easy diamond to get out of without facing the wrath of some angry fans. I think I would have required that the fans be cleared away before I head up those steps, especially after a call where you know a large contingent of fans are going to be screaming.
  21. This is one of the rules that I see many coaches misinterpret as they conflate "base path" with "base line". When teaching our younger umpires during the winter, this is one of the plays we physically show them in class. The confused looks we get at first show that most people don't know the proper call here. They only read "the runner has 3 feet" and then apply their own logic after that.
  22. In LL Majors (11-12 year olds), I'm letting that run score and putting the batter back in the box. The fact that the coaches didn't have an issue doesn't make it right, it just means they didn't know the rule either (or at least the OC didn't).
  23. Yes, the trailing runner would be out at the time of the pass.
