Hypothetical: Inside pitch. Batter checks his swing. Sounds/looks like it got the bat and you signal a foul ball. Batter pleads that he was hit by the pitch. He comes to you to show stitches or any marking that he was hit by the pitch.

What do you do? Stick with your call? Use the evidence and award him first? What is the SOP for that situation?

Send him to first base.  Use the tools you have like Matt said.  I had a dead ball strike three last weekend and I wasn't sure until I saw the kid shaking his hand.

Eject him for showing you up.  It's just like a coach bringing out a rule book.

Or, what Matt said.

The first thing to say/do is to not do/say anything. Watch B's reaction, re-compute the sound that you heard. If the HBP was hard enough to leave a mark, his immediate reaction will probably tell the tale. Slow down this call. That said, it's going to have to be VERY compelling evidence for me to reverse that call.

The follow-up question to this thread should be, how do you keep DHC from being ejected after you reverse that call.

Show the defensive coach the marks...walk him all the way down to first and let him see it!  :-)

Did it last week. Kept the Coach in the game. He yelled a little bit but not a lot.
