I never saw "skinned infields" in the 70's and early 80's. Was married from 1985 until 2010. Never saw a "skinned infield" during that time either. Ever since then I've played almost exclusively on "skinned infields" Just an observation.

If there were skinned fields in my home town, we'd be a misnomer.

I call them "home."

Be thankful for what y'all have because I can assure you your dirtfields are still better than ours.

OK. The explanation is probably partly that we have a growing season longer than the week of July 15. :D

OK. The explanation is probably partly that we have a growing season longer than the week of July 15. :DWhere do you know a place were the ball stops in mid-July? ASA second season goes till August and Midnight Suns play until October.

Oh, by the way, those fields are HELL to play on. You notice how to dirt is a weird gray-ashy color? We're pretty sure they mixed concrete in with the dirt while UNEVENLY filling those fields so all the water would run towards the plate and everybody would be miserable and some fields aren't chalked. It's not just "we haven't grown grass on this nice little dirt field because only the little kids play on it." It's more like "oh my god I just got a huge scrape up my side from trying to slide and why are there so many rocks was that a foul ball oh geez why are we even sitill playing in this god awful town I can't walk through this mud."

Pay your taxes, friends.

Around here you won't find many non-dirt infields, I think of the 50 fields we use 3-5 are grass infields, its also common place on the dirt fields to have to stop play because the wind kicks up the dirt causing terrible visibility for everyone.

BTW - to those who think "skinned" is a strange regional thing:

NCAA Softball 2014 - 2015 rule book

2.13  . .  It is highly recommended that a skinned infield be used. The skinned area should be determined by measuring a 60-foot arc from the front center of the pitcher’s plate.
