If a balk is called, and the pitcher delivers the pitch and the batter hits a single, what's the mlb rule on this?

The balk is ignored as long as the batter reaches (which happens on the single) and all runners advance at least one base (I have to think they do on a hit but it's possible they didn't).  If those conditions are not met then the hit didn't happen, it was no pitch and the balk is enforced.

So they only advance one base no matter the outcome of the hit?

What do you think?  Advance one base is the requirement of the rule.  I hate when coaches come in here and want us to write what they want to read.

Let me write a situation that addresses everyone's angle —

R1, R2... Balk called as pitch is delivered. BR hits a single to right. All runners advance one base, but R2 tries his luck and attempts to score. He is thrown out at the plate.

What is the ruling?

A second situation based on @pnewton's posting –

R2... Balk called as pitch delivered... Bloop over F6's head, who scoops it up, wheels and throws to F5, who happens to get R2 caught in a run-down. BR has, of course, obtained 1B already, so it would be scored as a Hit. R2 is tagged out.

What's the ruling?

Play stands with runners at 1 and 2 and 1 additional out. (balk ignored)

Call time and award balk (R2 did not advance 1 base). R2 goes to 3 , BR back at bat. Pitch ignored.

:ranton: This is NOT an esoteric, third world play. It is very plainly covered in the rule book. Read your rule book people!!  :rantoff:

No.  If the batter runner and all runners on base advance at least one base, the balk is nullified.

So, if the batter hits a homerun, all runners advance and score.

On the other hand, lets say you have a runner on second.  Pitcher is called for a balk and batter rips one into the gap.  R2 scores and BR rounds second and heads for third.  The throw beats him and the BR is OUT at third.  The balk is still nullified, the R2 Scores, and the BR is out at third.

Oh no, I'm so sorry but the correct answer is "touchdown"! If you'd kept your run of those answers you'd have won today. :(

Better luck next time.

Why do so many folks have trouble understanding this?  Really, guys, it's NOT complicated.

If a pitcher balks but still delivers the pitch, the ball remains alive.

If the batter and all base runners advance at least one base, the balk is ignored and the play stands, otherwise kill the play and enforce the balk.

Runners are free to attempt to advance beyond the base they would have been awarded on the balk, but do so at their own risk.

Perfect example:

With R1, pitcher balks but delivers pitch.

Batter lines single to CF, but R1 is thrown out at 3rd.

Did batter and runner each advance 1 base?  Yes, so balk is negated and the play stands.

OR:

Same situation, but batter's line drive to F8 is caught, R1 returns to first.

Did runner and batter each advance 1 base? No, so the play is killed and the balk is enforced.

R1 gets 2nd and batter returns to plate with the same count he had before the balk.
