Runner on second. The runner tries to steal third, the catcher steps back to avoid the hitter in the right handed batters box, the batter then steps in front of the catcher and blocks his throwing path to third. The catcher throws the ball and hits the batter in thr throat. What is the ruling?

Batter INT. The batter may not step out of the batter's box nor make any other motion (besides swinging at the pitch) that hinders the catcher's play on a runner. Intent is irrelevant.

 

The ball is dead, the batter is out, and R2 must return to 2B. If the batter struck out before interfering, then R2 is out for the INT. 6.06(c )

 

Edited to add: plus ice for the batter's neck. Ouch!

Well the umps totally blew it. They called dead ball and let the kid stay at third and batter walked after next pitch. My son was the catcher.

I have little confidence in the validity of play descriptions from perceived jipped kid's parent.

Well the umps totally blew it. They called dead ball and let the kid stay at third and batter walked after next pitch. My son was the catcher.

Unless "dead ball" (ugh) was called because the batter was injured, something is amiss. It's either a live ball and nothing (no interference) or "time" is called once the initial throw didn't retire R2 and the batter called out for interference and R2 returned.

There is no reason (other than the batter being injured) to kill the play unless interference is called.

The umps are learning, too.  Unless this was a HS Varsity game or above (and even then, we're all still learning), there's little cause to berate the umpire.

Even though a "best answer" designation has already been given, I think it needs some clarification.

 

First, the original post did not specify which rule set the scenario was being played under. OBR was assumed and therefore that was the rule set used to support the answer. I agree that OBR 6.06c does tell us to call the batter out for interference on this kind of play. However, due to the placement of the citation it made it appear as if that is the rule to call out the runner if the batter had struck out. Of course, that rule is 7.09e. Also, Federation rules handle the situation of a retired batter interfering somewhat differently than OBR and NCAA rules.
