Depends.  In this case, I wouldn't have given the pitcher time...the team was trying the hidden ball trick so we would've put the defense at a disadvantage by doing so.

I believe that in this case the crew knew ahead of time, by doing their homework, that they like to try the hidden ball trick so they were aware, as they would have been anyway since they all had the status of the ball at the front of their minds.

is there a reason to call time?'at any level? No. Umpires should not call time unnecessarily.

Unless your point is that an engaged clock operator will see the subterfuge and not start it, tipping off the offense.

Do you call time when the SS or 2nd ask for time after a throw in from the outfield, cause he's afraid he might throw it over the pitchers head?.... I surely dont

For a kid tying their shoe I've always called time, now maybe that wasn't right, and that's why I was asking.

got into quite the argument this past summer w/ an ADULT F6 who just couldn't understand why I wouldn't give him time. He said "well it will be your fault if I overthrow it then"  Shake my damn head man.

We're in the college section. I was speaking out of place in what MLB tried in the AFL and what they're going to do in MiLB this year.

If they were to do this trick in an MiLB game and the clock operator started the clock indicating to the offense that the pitcher has the ball, you'd have a pretty good-sized argument on your hands:

This isn't being mentioned, but when I saw the video in Chicago I said this is how I would have called it...

9-2-e AR 4 - "...Rosin from the bag may not be applied to the glove or to any part of the pitcher's uniform. PENALTY - Warning on the first offense; ejection from the game on the second offense."

 

That's pretty cut and dry. He had the rosin bag in his glove, call time, warn him that he can't do it. Argue with the coach. Move on.
