Had a "Jimmy Hughes" moment last night....

MSBL 35+ League, I'm in B.  R1/R3.  7th inning I think.

 

My partner behind the plate signals the 1st-3rd rotation, I signal back.  Base hit to LF, R1 rounds 2 and is heading for 3.  By now, I'm probably where "C" position is watching the ball.   There is a play at 3 and I don't hear anything.  3B looks at me.  I look left to see where my partner is and he's behind the plate 3BLX.  I just stare at him and he gives me a very subtle safe mechanic, he's obviously not going make the call.  I call SAFE.  Nobody says anything.  All I can think of is the "Jimmy Hughes" clip from Yes Dear and @sdix00 signature.  :shrug:

 

Between innings I go to him and ask what happened and he said he just forgot to rotate, and he was sorry.  There hadn't been anyone all game that went 1st-3rd and he said he just spaced it. :smachhead:

 

Pretty funny if you ask me!

It happens.  Happened to me last year.  I was standing in 3BLX and felt like everyone was staring at me.  My partner made the call.  It wasn't close so no big deal.

I pregame this whether I have plate or bases. 

"Base guy has all runners at all bases unless plate guy calls him off, regardless of what rotation should happen."

That's why it's important to communicate with your partners.  When I move up to 3rd I make sure my partner knows I'm there.  A simple, "Bob, I'm at third" takes out all the guesswork. I appreciate it when my partners do the same when I'm in the field.  If I don't hear them I prepare as though they aren't there until I can get a look.  Just because a signal was exchanged doesn't mean he's going to automatically be there.

I forgot my rotation with one partner and he being an older MUCH more experienced umpire looked at me standing at POP glaring after the close play at 3B while he calmly made a safe signal and then proceeded to chew my derriere after the game.  Haven't made that mistake since.

Compare "I enjoy cooking my family and friends" to "I enjoy cooking, my family and friends".

 

Amazing how one little comma can completely change the meaning of a sentence.

I was merely pointing out that PU should initiate signals.  Most of the signals let BU know what PU will do in a given situation - rotation, staying home, stack tag, etc.  I was taught the proper mechanic is for PU to signal and then BU to acknowledge.
